Synopsis: New York City, just before Christmas. The last pair of black cashmere gloves in Bloomingdale's is on its way to the counter. As the gloves arrive, Sara (Kate Beckinsale) and Jonathan (John Cusack) claim them simultaneously. And so it begins--Sara and Jonathan go to a little coffee shop, named Serendipity, to decide who gets the gloves. They skate in Central Park. They look at the stars--the Cassiopeia constellation has the same pattern as the freckles on Sara's forearm. She writes her phone number in a book, saying she'll sell it to a random bookstore tomorrow. Jonathan writes his number on a five-dollar bill and she gives it to a street vendor. If destiny means them to be together, the book will find him, and the five-dollar bill will find her. Several years later--in New York--Jonathan is about to marry Hally (Bridget Moynahan). On the West Coast, Lars (John Corbett) proposes to Sara. Both Jonathan and Sara remember their delightful night. Jonathan sets out with friend Dean (Jeremy Piven) to find the book. Sara, with her friend Eve (Molly Shannon), flies to New York looking for Jonathan. Crisp direction from Peter Chelsom, a witty script by Marc Klein, and beautiful performances by John Cusak and Kate Beckinsale, make SERENDIPITY a delightful romantic comedy. [More]

  • Serendipity
  • Irresistible stars John Cusack (AMERICA'S SWEETHEARTS, HIGH FIDELITY) and Kate Beckinsale (PEARL HARBOR, BROKEDOWN PALACE) are drawn together and take a chance on love in this critically acclaimed romantic comedy! In the course of one magical evening, Jonathan (Cusack) and Sara (Beckinsale) meet unexpectedly ... then part without expectation when she decides they must let fate determine if they are meant to be together. Years later, they are both engaged to others but cannot give up the dream that -- despite time, distance, and the obstacles that conspire to keep them apart -- they will one day meet again. Also starring Jeremy Piven (THE FAMILY MAN, VERY BAD THINGS) and Molly Shannon (SUPERSTAR, NEVER BEEN KISSED) in a stellar supporting cast -- you're destined to agree with audiences everywhere who fell for the surprising charms of this delightful big-screen romance!

They say romantic comedies like Serendipity are what we can expect in times of crisis. Another reason to pray for peace.

Like purchasing a CD of '80s super-hits off a late-night infomercial, watching Serendipity leaves you feeling somewhat violated but no less delighted at the trespass.

Rarely does a movie feel so shrink-wrapped; you expect it to be marked down come spring.

It's a good date flick, more than okay for a rainy matinee or a rental later on, but eminently forgettable and ohh so cute.

Pretty and witty but too preplanned, the film zips us along merrily yet fades as soon as it's over.

A series of near misses and close calls which you'll either find delightful or irritating, depending on your tolerance for whimsical romance.

While I don't think this is the kind of movie worth running out to see, if you like sentimental pictures, you will probably enjoy what Serendipity has to offer.

These are frightening, uncertain times and there is something soothing about watching a movie and knowing exactly what is going to happen.

Various 'new age' detours addressing destiny and soulmates, as well as a jazzy soundtrack of original tunes by Alan Silvestri, make the familiar material seem lively and original.

, Serendipity is John Cusack doing Gabriel Garcia Marquez. As bizarre as that marriage might sound, there's a lightness to the union that forgives a multitude of sins

Textbook romantic comedy, complete with the good feeling that you’ll leave with – even if this does disappear as fast as a snowflake on the tongue.
