Mike Scotti was a First Lieutenant with the U.S. Marines when he and his outfit, the First Battalion, were sent to Iraq as part of the American invasion forces in 2003. Along with his weapons, Scotti brought a miniature digital video camera into battle, and he kept a record of what he and his fellow soldiers saw as they traveled through hostile territory en route to Baghdad. Most fictional films simply can't capture the immediacy of the experience the way a raw chronicle like this one, from director Kristian Fraga and 1st Lt. Mike Scotti, does.

Much of this footage might have been illuminating, even fascinating, in 2003. But seven years on, it's ancient history lacking insight, hindsight or a fresh take.
Everything zips by our eyes, thanks to the director's penchant for editing together footage of mutilated corpses and tense gunfire way too snappily.
A potent reminder of how thankless a soldier's job is.
A handful of real Iraqis were shown, bodies destroyed by explosion and gunfire--and, in the end, what I'm calling this movie is entertaining. That's no tidy proposition.
Finds just the right balance between entertaining the audience and provoking them emotionally as well as intellectually. A very appropriate companion piece to The Hurt Locker.
The battles we see resemble less Coppola's clear-eyed surrealism and more the incoherence-skirting camera jostles of contemporary action directing.
