The genitals are exposed while the motivations are mysterious in 'Shame,' an elegantly composed but overwrought film about a man who wants to f(ornicate) away the pain.
Wow you could not be more wrong, nor could you understand addiction any less. There are no motivations for addiction. There may have been at the start but for addicts those motivations are long since forgotten. They don't continue their addiction for a specific reason. They do so in the face of numerous reasons to STOP, which we see in Shame.
McQueen puts us in the middle of the madness, and doesn't give us any easy answers, as there are none in the world of addiction. I would argue that Fassbender is not "fornicating away the pain." We see numerous moments of great pain on his face during sex. Sex is a fix. He knows that continuing only perpetuates his pain, yet he continues because he simply can't stop.
