I think he's trying to insult the human characters as the usual hot young people that are wooden and are just meant to be killed or eaten in horror movies. He's also saying Ellis tried to make them three dimensional in this one. I could be wrong though.

that is what he's saying, yes. He also implies that it is really the sole redeeming quality of the film.
