Total Recall: Deadly Sea Creatures

Summary

As we approach Labor Day weekend, it's time to say goodbye to summer -- and thanks to director David R. Ellis (The Final Destination), we get to bid it adieu in the most appropriate fashion: by lining up to watch scantily clad twentysomethings futilely splash around in abject terror while trying to escape from bloodthirsty sharks. Yes, that's right, it's time for Shark Night 3D, and to celebrate its finny arrival, we decided to devote this week's list to Hollywood's hunters of the deep. Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water, it's time for Total Recall -- Deadly Sea Creatures edition! Back to Article

I grew up loving Godzilla movies. I'm pretty sure I've seen all but three or four of the Godzilla movies, there being well more than 20 of them. And Godzilla isn't the only menace from the sea to be seen in his movies. There's Titanosaurus, an amphibious dinosaur, seen in The Terror of Mechagodzilla, as well as Ebirah, a rather weak prawn-like creature. Then there's Hedorah, the smog-monster. And probably others.

I don't know why, but I think I might be a Godzilla nerd.

I think I saw them all. I even had an 8 mm film I could play on my grandma's projector, no sound just subtitles.. but even still it was awesome. One time I saw a Godzilla triple feature at the theater, like 5 hours of Godzilla back to back. So imagine my dismay when the Emmerich brothers bastardized my childhood obsession. It didn't even look like Godzilla. If they make another (which I hear Lengendary is), the director must be old enough to recall the originals. Also, I would prefer the setting to be Japan, the New York thing didn't really do it for me. (For some strange reason they all speak to each other in English, though.

Come to think of it, why is Hollywood remaking Godzilla at all. Why don't the Japanese do it? It's their creation, after all. You could dub it in English, and it would still probably be more true to it's origin than anything we are likely to see from American films.

I think money is probably a factor. Consider that the last Godzilla movie released in the U.S. made around $10 million. An American-made, filmed-in-English, Godzilla movie would simply make more money. So it's kind of a choice between safely serving the pre-existing fans, or attempting to broaden the appeal, quite possibly departing from the originals.

Either way though, I'd be happy, as long as we get the REAL Godzilla. I'm interested in how the same Godzilla will be handled in American hands. I'd also be fine with another Japanese movie. I'm just glad I'll get my first chance to see a Godzilla movie in theaters.

At least Toho let us see the real Godzilla beat the heck out of the fake one, aka Zilla, in Final Wars.

Hollywood already remade Godzilla (from the makers of Independence Day), yet . . . Hollywood is remaking it again--I hope in the new remake of a remake (it seems) that Godzilla resembles the "real Godzilla."

In addition to this, Gojira (Godzilla) Dubbed for America not only translated the Japanese to English but Butchered entire scenes and Super imposed a White Actor into the MIX. To compare the original Gojira to its english translation counter part Godzilla is like comparing apples to Origins. They are two very different stories.

Yeah I wish they would just leave Godjira alone.

Super 8 and 8mm . . . I used to project the Super 8 movies on my bedroom wall; and when we used to visit my grandmother, I used to project Laurel and Hardy movies on a Silva-Lite screen. Life Before VCRs.

Jaws remains one of my favorite films of all time. I don't think any summer blockbuster has come close to rivaling the sheer awesomeness of that film. I wish I had been alive to have seen it in theaters back in 1975. It's also one of the few films that I prefer over the novel it was based on.

Same here, I loved Jaws. My sister worked at a theater when I was 11 and it came out. I saw it once at another theater, then it moved to hers. I went to work with her every day and saw it 4 or 5 times day. I counted I saw it 110 times at the theater, and who knows how many since then on VHS and DVD.

Yeah the novel really sucked

I wouldn't say the novel sucked, it's just that it was slower than the film. It focused more on the effects the shark's presence was having on the town rather than the attacks. All of this I appreciated but I got bored halfway through (I really didn't care about Ellen Brody's marital indiscretions and liked film Hooper better than novel Hooper). I will say that Quint had a better death in the book but the shark's death in the movie was awesome.
