Comic Book Veteran to Show Some New "Spirit"
by Scott Weinberg | April 06, 2005
Discuss Article
Artist Jeph Loeb is best known as the creator of several great "Batman" books and as a producer on TV's "Smallville," but he's just been commissioned to adapt Will Eisner's "The Spirit" for the big screen. Eisner is a legendary figure in the world of comic books, and he OKed the project just before passing away in January. Variety catches us up with the "Spirit" lore by saying it "follows a masked detective who is believed dead and uses that to his advantage to fight the criminals of Central City from his base at Wildwood Cemetery."To date, the only other feature film based on Eisner's work is 1984's "Sheena."

Jeff Loeb created several Batman limited series with Tim Sale, among them Batman: The Long Halloween. This series was hailed by many comic book critics, creators, and the like when it came out, and it remains one of my favorite Batman stories.
