Robert Downey Jr. talks Sherlock Holmes & Iron Man 2 - RT Interview

The actor on his two big franchise outings.

RT Interview: Robert Downey Jr. on Sherlock Holmes

Robert Downey Jr. can't quite remember why he was on the phone to Guy Ritchie the first time Sherlock Holmes was mentioned, but it was to give him some advice about the trailer for his comic thriller RocknRolla, not to bid for the lead in his $80m Victorian detective caper. But Downey does remember that when the conversation finally swung round that way, Ritchie told him he'd be too old for it anyway.

Nevertheless, within weeks of that chat, a press conference was held in the Freemasons Hall in central London, announcing the news that Downey had signed to play the eccentric sleuth. Just over 12 months later, the film is imminent, and what at first looked like stunt casting now appears to be a stroke of crazy genius. Once a cadaverous codger with a deerstalker hat and fogey pipe, Arthur Conan Doyle's most famous literary creation gets a jolt of adrenaline with Downey's firecracker performance, cutting a psychedelic swathe through the fog of Old London Town.

He talks exclusively to Rotten Tomatoes about the challenge of playing the most brilliant man there never was...

Bringing back Sherlock Holmes is a daunting thing. At what point did you think, 'I can do this'?

Robert Downey Jr.: Well, I never thought I could or couldn't, actually. I just remember talking to Joel Silver and saying, "Dude, where's our franchise?" Joel Silver and Mrs. Downey had done Guy's film previous to Sherlock, RocknRolla. Rather, they had put up the dough and had enjoyed the results. In the meantime, [producer] Lionel Wigram, had, I guess, been trying to figure out - like the rest of us, once we got it going - how come Sherlock Holmes had not been snatched up and done already? I remember in the 80s, 90s and on through nowadays, all search engines were on high alert for what the next franchise could be. So I guess it had been hiding in plain sight all along.

Was your decision to sign up determined at all by who would be Watson?

RD: Absolutely. That, to me, was the whole point. The realisation I had was that Holmes and Watson were the first action duo - I dare anybody to predate them. So I thought, Wow, this really is a two-hander. And while the script had the relationship there, I'm sure, initially, it was geared toward reintroducing a generation to Holmes himself. And maybe it was, partially, to share the load, or take off the pressure, but I think more so because it was my first instinct, I said, 'Well, this is a movie about two guys.' The movie, just as the books, is told, through Doyle as Watson, describing Holmes and his adventures. At a certain level, Doyle is Watson. It's hard to make that come through in the script, because usually when studios take a property, they decide to spin a point of view on it. Well, this one didn't need to be spun, we just needed to find the right guy. So we were pursuing Jude, and, understandably, he was cautiously optimistic. I asked him to come over to... where were we staying? What's the coolest old-school hotel in London?

Claridges?

RD: Claridges! Of course. And I had a feeling it was kind of a perfect match, as all of the females on my team all of a sudden needed to be in the hallway for no reason when he was coming up in the elevator. So I thought that it could really work for everybody. I knew that it was gonna work out, because two seconds after we started sitting down and having a coffee, we were already talking like we were shaping and workshopping every and anything that was possible with these guys. And, most of all, we were looking back into the massive database of books and short stories regarding those two fellows.

Jude Law has said that the stories prefigured the age of technology, information and computers. Is that something you'd agree with?

RD: Very much so. And that just goes back to Doyle. Doyle was a serious spiritualist. He was in touch with a lot of intuitive folks. I know there's some square, maybe it's Berkeley Square, in London where he had a spiritual society. As a matter of fact, in the 80s, when I was doing Air America, I used to go to the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Spiritual Society and listen to mediums as they shared the intimate goings on of the recently deceased with their mourning loved ones.

Continue on to page 2 as Downey shares his curiousity about spiritualism, the rumours about Brad Pitt's Moriarty and what we can expect from Iron Man 2.

I have mixed feelings about this movie. I don't know if you can warp a figure like Holmes into an action star. I still get the 'Van Helsing' vibe everytime I see the trailer for this. All action, nary a plot to be found.
It just seems too far out of the character's true element to be believed or to have any entertainment value.

(@rle4lunch) I think this will work out. Unlike Van Helsing, all parties involved in Sherlock have a good track record and are, hopefully, at this point in their careers selective in the projects they decide to take on. As for the plot issue, there have been hints from the trailer at what the plot will be (kiddnaping and spiritual sacricificing) but you'll just have to wait for the flick to come out like the rest of us I suppose. Cheers!

DOWNY is an incredible dude, man . . .
from LESS THAN ZERO . . .
through a tremendous, literally, death-defying, drug odyssey
to ACADEMY AWARD level performances.

How does Robert Downy account for his ability to survive all of these many years?

TO DRUGS we lost:
Jimi Hendrix, Lenny Bruce, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, John Belushi, River Phoenix, Chris Farley, Robin Harris, Jerry Garcia, Keith Moon, Bon Scott, Shannon Hoon, Eddie Kendricks
. . .but not Robert Downey, Jr.

and thank God you know.

I'm a HUGE Sherlock Holmes fan but I have to agree with the fact that the trailer looks a little Van Helsing-ish. They had to give Holmes some action in the movie because that's what's going to make it into a popular franchise; but I have no doubts that Robert Downey Jr. has put a new twist on the classic Holmes and done it spectacularly :)

Looking forward to this almost as much as Avatar. C'mon, people, it's RDJ and Guy Ritchie. I can't see this being a miss.

I think Iron Man 2 and Sherlock Holmes are going to great, their is a lot of talent in front and behind the camera. I think Iron Man 2 is going to cross the 400 Million line in US Box Office alone. I fear that Sherlock Holmes may under perform at the box office, Ritchie has an awful box office track record and this film isn't generating as much hyped as Avatar. Avatar is going to steal the audience from this film and Alvin & The Chipmunks 2 is going to steal the rest of the younger audience. I think a lowly $90,000,000 is a reasonable prediction for Sherlock.

Downey is a great actor, glad to see he is finally getting big roles. I'm not sure about Sherlock Holmes, the trailer doesn't look bad, I liked Downey in particular, but it also did not leave me blown away. And I like Ritchie, but he has made his share of bad movies. I hope Iron Man 2 is going to be amazing. They have a lot of talent in it, so it is very likely it will be. The only thing that worries me is that it seems like they might be biting off more than they can chew and there might be too much going on in the movie, especially with everything that will undoubtly be put in to help set up The Avengers.

I think it is kind of funny that the Holmes being portrayed by RDJ in this movie is actually a more truthful reincarnation of Sherlock Holmes from the books. The Sherlock Holmes seen on TV in other reincarnations was nowhere near as capable as the Holmes in the books. I am happy that Guy Ritchie and his writers have finally taken the time to consider all those single sentences in the books which gave so many clues as to what Holmes could REALLY do.

I'm looking forward to Sherlock Holmes. I read a preliminary script, and it was pretty good. I know they've put in a few more rewrites to polish up the action and the dialogue so I'm expecting it to be very good. I really enjoy Robert Downey Jr as an actor although I'm no fan of Guy Ritchie. I expect this to be a solid hit.

Massive understatement. 2009 had some of the best and some of the absolute worst.

Well said, man. The first time I heard someone complain that Homes wasn't an in any regard an action hero , I rolled my eyes. Hello? Anyone ever read "The Adventure of the Final Problem? That's the (in)famous story where Sir Arthur decided to kill off Holmes by having him plunge over the side of Reichenbach Falls while locked in a death struggle with Prof. Moriarity (It was only after thousands of people voiced their intense dissatisfaction that Doyle eventually brought the character back). Holmes could get his physical groove on as well as his intellectual one. I think this movie looks smart and funny, with RDJ and Jude Law representing brilliant casting choices. Seeing this one opening day.

Is the writer deliberately toying with an almost-spoonerism when he describes Robert Downey Jr playing Sherlock Holmes as "stunt casting"? If so, I agree absolutely.
