Critics Consensus: Sherlock Holmes Plays a Good Game

Plus, Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol and Young Adult are Certified Fresh, while Chipwrecked is all wet.

This week at the movies, we've got a brilliant detective (Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law), secret agents (Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol, starring Tom Cruise and Simon Pegg), singing rodents (Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked, starring Jason Lee and David Cross), and a prodigal daughter (Young Adult, starring Charlize Theron and Patton Oswalt). What do the critics have to say?

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows

60%

Purists griped about the first Sherlock Holmes, but audiences didn't seem to mind the famously logical detective in full on action mode. Critics say you'll get more of the same with A Game of Shadows, a muscular, bombastic adventure that benefits greatly from a strong cast. Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law are back as Holmes and Watson, and this time they face their most formidable opponent: the nefarious Professor Moriarty (Jared Harris), who spins a conspiracy to profit from political chaos. The pundits say A Game of Shadows is bigger but not necessarily better than the first movie, but it looks terrific, and Downey and Law make for a splendid odd couple at the center. (Check out this week's Total Recall, in which we run down producer Joel Silver's best-reviewed films, as well as our gallery of Sherlock Holmes movies through the years.)

Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol

93%

It appears that Pixar wizard Brad Bird has done the impossible, or at least the unlikely: critics say Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol is not only the best entry in the franchise, it's one of the finest blockbusters of the year, filled with exhilarating action sequences and memorable characters. The Impossible Missions Force has been falsely accused of bombing the Kremlin, so it's up to Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his crew to go rogue and clear the organization of any wrongdoing -- preferably while scaling skyscrapers in Dubai. The pundits say the Certified Fresh Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol is light on plot, but the stunning set pieces and brisk pacing more than compensate.

Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked

12%

Another year, another Alvin and the Chipmunks movie -- and critics say Chipwrecked is as middling as its two predecessors, though the wee ones probably won't mind. This time out, Alvin, Simon, and Theodore join David Seville (Jason Lee) and the Chipettes on a luxury cruise, where they make enough mischief to get themselves shipwrecked on a desert island that's not as empty as it first appears. The pundits say Chipwrecked is a reasonably safe bet for undiscriminating children, but parents are unlikely to find much amusement in this juvenilia.

Young Adult

80%

Four years after the whip-smart, quirky Juno, director Jason Reitman and screenwriter Diablo Cody are back with the pitch-black Young Adult, and critics say it's a sharp and occasionally painfully astute comedy. Charlize Theron stars as a former high school queen bee who, now pushing 40, returns to her hometown to get back together with an old flame (Patrick Wilson). Unfortunately for her, he's happily married, though our heroine does end up bonding with another former classmate (Patton Oswalt) -- one she treated badly despite his massive crush on her. The pundits say the Certified Fresh Young Adult is an intelligent and often very funny character study, one that's so honest that it may make you cringe from time to time.

Wait, your reason for NOT seeing it is because it's only on IMAX with the prologue to Dark Knight Rises?? I'm lost, here...

To be fair to John, he may not have known about the TDKR prologue being included :P.

However, even if John didn't know (or even care)about the TDKR prologue, there is no justifiable excuse to miss witnessing the Burj Khalifa scene in all of its glory at the IMAX :)

I had 0 hopes for Mission Impossible, except for Brad Bird being attached, now I am more than intrigued to see it.
I will be watching Sherlock Holmes even though I am not pleased with the fact that Moriarty appears as a villain, even though he appears in all but one Holmes story and that's when the characters meet and fight. The chemistry between Watson and Holmes seems to still be there, even if it's looking like it's marginally fresh.

Mission: Impossible - 93% (Amazing) (Fresh)
Alvin And The Chipmunks - 13% (Rotten) (UNBEARABLE AND UNLUCKY TO BOOT!!!)

Young Adult looks good. xD

Good job, Sherlock and Ethan. You have pleased the critics and delighted them once again. ;)

Might want to tone it down a bit fella. Mind you enthusiasm is nice once and awhile, but this is not a blog website. RT is a site where cinema junkies critically analyze films and enjoy the best of the best, not eternally spaz.
I have been looking forward to Sherlock Holmes 2 for quite sometime. Robert Downey Jr. Delicious.

Definitely going to see Ghost Protocol this weekend or next. Glad to see Brad Bird has made an excellent transition to live action. Hopefully Andrew Stanton has similar success with John Carter in March.

I'm hoping that, against all odds, Chipwrecked bombs on unfathomable levels.

Whilst the previous Chipmunks films were undoubtedly awful, their appeal to the younger generation is hard to ignore. Knowing that the previous film was even more successful than the first one could be an indicator of Chipwrecked's likely success....

Obviously, I hope that I am horribly, horribly wrong. I really just want M:I4 to do well to help reinvigorate Cruise's career.

Sherlock Holmes was always a wild card. I was hoping a stronger Villian might take the Holmes franchise to new heights, but if it's the same level as the first that's fine with me. Mission Impossible is probably the only franchise who's 3rd and 4th movies are better then the first two. My B.O predictions:
1 Sherlock Holmes 2 59 Million
2 Alvin and the Chipmunks 3 44 Million
3 Mission Impossible 4 8 Million
4 New Year's Even 7 Million
5 The Sitter 5 Million

I'm interested in Sherlock Holmes but I still need to see Hugo. I'll probably wait for Mission Impossible to come to Blu-Ray since I haven't seen the other movies and I was never really interested in the franchise to begin with. Hopefully Chipwrecked doesn't make as much money as the other two movies.

Cannot wait to see MI4! I love each sequel more than the one it preceeded - and each had a unique feel - so I'm intrigued with this one.

I wanted to love the first Holmes, but felt like the actual plot was paper-thin. It seemed like a movie where you get to know Sherlock and then, oh yeah, here's a little story to go with the character study. That said, I'll still rent it.

Young Adult's trailers have been great, so I will for sure rent this as well.
