Movie Info

Originally made for television, this adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's classic mystery sees master detective Sherlock Holmes (Sir Ian Richardson) called upon to solve another of Victorian England's mysteries. This time around, Holmes and the skeptical Dr. Watson (Donald Churchill) investigate why members of an aristocratic family are dropping dead: Is an ancient curse to blame, or will the sleuth uncover a more rational explanation?

Audience Reviews for Sherlock Holmes - The Hound of the Baskervilles

What I like most about this version of The Hound of the Baskervilles is that it is very much a British 'made for TV' version of the time. It's the sort of thing I grew up on. It's not got a huge budget (although it probably wasn't bad) so the performance is everything. With a fantastic cast such as Denholm Elliott, Ian Richardson, Brian Blessed and Ronald Lacey though you can't go wrong.

An honest retelling of this story which has been filmed many times and certainly one that Arthur Conan Doyle may have approved of. Unfortunately Ian Richardson, for all his acting talents, is woefully miscast as the great detective.

    1. Sir Henry Baskerville: Martin Shaw seems to have been unable to acieve an American accent, and has been dubbed from the start, most shots are from an angle not requiring much lipm synch! Ian Richardson is an amiable Holmes, no haughty demeanor!
