The relatively simple story about a young man, sentenced to death for his murder of a cab driver, makes an important statement about capital punishment and the fine line between victim and murderer. The technical feat undertaken to support the weight of the film's message is astounding, including the use of six hundred different green filters by cinematographer Slavomir Idziak. Kieslowski's final product provides not only a compelling social commentary, but also a benchmark in cinematic technique. [More]

Reviews for A Short Film About Killing
The film forces the audience to confront the most vile aspects of life, without offering enough intellectual substance to justify sitting through such brutality.
One of the most horrific films you're likely to see -- and one of the most oddly didactic.
Kieslowski and screenwriter Krzysztof Piesiewicz refuse to stack the deck: There are no cardboard villains here, only flawed, fully imagined human beings.
Kieslowski movingly demonstrates the unexpected connections that strangers make, and ponders the metaphysical forces that not only bind us, but also redeem us.
One of the ugliest movies ever made, and that's just exactly the way it should be: it takes place in an irredeemably ugly world.
