A domesticated Shrek hatches a plan to recapture his mojo and discovers what life in Far Far Away land would have been like had he never existed in this final chapter of the popular animated film series. There used to be a time when the villagers would run in terror at the mere mention of the name Shrek, but these days the big green ogre is married to Princess Fiona and raising triplets. Maintaining your fierce public persona is no simple task when you're juggling infants and changing diapers,

An entertaining conclusion to the franchise -- one that parents should happily endure. But let's hope that's all, folks.

By the middle of the second act, Forever After finally finds its groove, becoming mildly amusing (the actors -- Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, Antonio Banderas -- are in fine form) but never rising to the inspired heights of the original.

It's no classic, but Shrek Forever After is a pleasant reminder that every time a cash register rings, this ogre turns angelic.

Reveals an urge by the filmmakers to wipe the slate clean, as large an admission that the series is out of ideas as one could get. That said, all involved do try to make the most of it.

It's sweet, mildly funny, and a pleasant enough farewell from these once beloved characters. But there's a somewhat melancholy tone to the proceedings, as we watch this franchise try to hold onto its final shreds of dignity.

Interestingly, ...Forever After's biggest influence appears not to be fairy tales this time, but rather the Back To The Future series.

I admit my gentle, feelgood buzz on leaving the cinema was rather premised on the assumption that the Shrek-pipeline is now empty, but it's an enjoyable film nonetheless and a nice way for the series to finish.

Shrek Forever After is an amiable but underpowered conclusion to a franchise that ran out of comic ideas six years ago. It is time to lay this ogre to rest.

Audience Reviews for Shrek Forever After

A decent installment in the series, better than the 3rd just about. I'm not sure they can churn anymore out without it going down hill pretty quickly though. Still prefer the first 2 films.

The final chapter in the ogre's adventures is not entirely en par with the first parts. You can't say that the plot takes the easy way out, the What If..approach actually has a lot of potential. What's lacking compared to the predecessors is a certain charm and the really big laughs. There are only few of those and to a certain degree it feels like you've seen it all before. It doesn't help that there have been visually more impressive animation films by now. Overall still very entertaining and a decent ending to the franchise, but still the weakest part by far.

Shrek the Third was a bad movie, especially coming off of the classic first two films in the franchise. The surprising thing about Shrek Forever After is not just that it didn't feel like a complete money grab like the third one did, but that it also felt like an earnest attempt to redeem the Shrek franchise, and end it on a good note. Lo and behold, it actually succeeds with a story that feels tailor-made as a complete finish to this ogre's story, and at times its story (revolving around Shrek being thrown into the past, without having ever saved Princess Fiona) feels like both a response to the complaints that the third movie took things in the wrong direction, and an apology for that film's utter failure. Shrek 4's animation is dated however, and it still doesn't have the same inventiveness and adult-oriented pop culture parodies on the scale of the first two (though it does indeed try), which in general keeps this film from being a classic. But as a way to end the series without a whimper, Shrek Forever After is satisfying - which is a big relief.

Ok Bottom line, is that everyone that hasn't seen this will think this film was make to make money like the previous installment (Shrek the Third). The predictions are right this film is just that but it has its moments I can see clearly they tried to redeem Shrek, Donkey, Puss and Fiona from the disaster that is Shrek 3 by showing that they can make a better plot. There is so many bad things about this film such as numoerous pop culture refrences and the typical jokes but damn it, its good enough to see Shrek one final time in the theatres because one thing is for sure. It will entertain kids.
