Michael Moore doesn’t believe balance — showing both sides of an issue — is necessary when presenting his eccentric and persuasive documentaries that examine various problems in American life. Since most of us have been screwed by our health insurance at least once, we’re more likely to buy into his total lack of faith in the American system of providing health coverage that is examined in Sicko.
Moore’s ongoing theme in all of his movies, that politicians controlled by corporate America give poor Americans the shaft all the time, is particularly effective in Sicko. Moore is frustrated that other large industrial nations have successful national health care for all their citizens — Canada, Great Britain and France — while America does not. Ask a Canadian and you’ll know their system isn’t close to perfect. However, when you see Americans citizens being dumped in the street because a hospital won’t be reimbursed for treating them, that seems so anti-American.
As always, Michael Moore has a good point, and Sicko should at least stir up a debate.
