When two brothers, straightlaced family man Hank (Bill Paxton) and simple-minded loser Jacob (Billy Bob Thornton)--along with Jacob's unabashed town-drunk friend Lou (Brent Briscoe)--find 4.4 million dollars inside a crashed plane, they believe they've found the financial answer to all their problems. All they have to do is keep it a secret until the plane is discovered and any investigations are completed. This proves to be easier said than done, however, when the three men (as well as Hank's surprisingly calculating wife, Sarah, played by Bridget Fonda), each with their different reasons, begin to lose trust in the others. When an FBI agent (Gary Cole) comes to town, the tension becomes explosive, peeling away layers of familial resentment and resulting in betrayal, deceit, and, ultimately, murder. Thornton's brilliantly understated and profoundly moving performance was recognized by the Academy with a nomination for Best Supporting Actor, while the taut script, by crime writer Scott B. Smith from his own novel, was also nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay. [More]

Reviews for A Simple Plan
Not really a movie about a simple plan that turns out to be a terrible idea, but a movie about a terrible idea that turns out to be a terrible idea
Overeager to pile so many possible, psych-lite motivations that nothing holds water or compels us very much... Terribly self-serious.
The theme of the ever-shifting tides of evil within people is a perfect fit for the dark sensibilities of Raimi.
It's been done before, and Raimi doesn't do it much differently or put his own stamp on it.
Unravels sadly in its second half, most of what transpires being utterly predictable, and what is not predictable, simply unbelievable.
I think director Raimi wanted this film to be another Fargo, and instead it was more like the first Evil Dead - all Billy Bob's charisma and nought else.
The director, never missing a beat, keeps the audience guessing the story's resolution until almost the last minute.
This is a strong, gut-wrenching, suspenseful film, one of the top ten of 1998.
A Simple Plan is neither a happy nor a pretty tale, but it builds uncommon dramatic power as its unpredictable plot unfolds.
The film manages to transcend its formula and become a very interesting study in what makes good people do evil things.
