In an extended visual gag, the payoff results in Bart Simpson's little ten year old package bared before the camera.
"We do lots of different kinds of jokes," explained producer Mike Scully. "My particular favorite kind is when we set up something where we're deliberately leading the audience to what they think the joke is, like the reveal of Bart at the end of the skateboard sequence."
The sequence in question has Bart dared to skateboard naked. As he rides along, various objects of scenery cover his private parts. On TV, that would be the whole joke, but not in a film.
"The audience thinks the whole joke is how many different ways can we hide Bart, and then to give them the little extra. Let them think we're doing to do this joke and do the other."
The Simpsons Movie is rated PG-13 "for irreverant humor throughout." See it this Friday.

arendr writes: on Jul 23 2007 06:58 PM Yes, why did he ruin it? I am seriously worried that I will hate this movie. The first thing that has made me laugh was the Spider-pig thing. And by the time I get to that part of the movie, I doubt it will be funny anymore. Oh well, at least I'll be able to see The Dark Knight teaser. Sad that I'm more looking forward to that than the movie. (Reply to this) |

This is just a lame ploy to get people to come to the theatre and see the corpse of a great franchise that died 6 or 7 years ago. I bet the whole joke is that he doesn%u2019t have anything to show anyway. Hilarious. (Reply to this) |

Scarborough Fair writes: on Jul 23 2007 08:00 PM I thought this movie looked bad, but then i saw the bits of that scene in Burns' office where they're like "look into your heart" and Smithers is behind going "no no!". I dunno, felt like old Simpsons suddenly. For me, the Simpsons movie will always be "Who Shot Mr. Burns?", I hope this mildly lives up to that. (Reply to this) |

TheIceGhost writes: on Jul 23 2007 08:07 PM In reply to this comment (#967725) "Who Shot Mr. Burns" was great... I know they've taken a lot of the old/veteran writers into their fold for this movie. I'm hoping to be pleasantly surprised. I agree with you too knowingtoast85, this movie will truly depend on the word-of-mouth from others. The whole Homer/pig thing they're doing is great. Pinchy, anyone? (Reply to this) |

RedRing writes: on Jul 23 2007 09:05 PM Uhm, so if this was a big joke..... why did he just spoil it for us? That was dumb. Did he really feel he had to explain such a low brow joke? That's like explaining the punchline of a joke before giving the set up. It's just stupid. (Reply to this) |

Scarborough Fair writes: on Jul 23 2007 09:45 PM Don't worry RedRing. If a joke is good enough, you can be told the punchline first, and then still laugh somewhere in the middle. (Reply to this) |

melikeemovies writes: on Jul 23 2007 10:34 PM >>well if he is so proud of this joke, why did he just go and ruin it for us? I hate to break it to you but the writers/producers of The Simpsons have been ruining jokes for the past 6 or 7 seasons. On the other hand, maybe he's so proud of this joke because it actually turns out to be funny unlike most of the episodes for the past 6 - 7 seasons. (Reply to this) |
