Robert Rodriguez to Direct the "Barbarella" Remake
by Scott Weinberg | May 22, 2007
Blog Article | Discuss Article
Forget those "Jetsons Movie" rumors for a little while and start wondering what this means to "Sin City 2." Robert Rodriguez just signed a deal to direct Dino De Laurentiis' long-discussed "Barbarella" remake.

Universal wants the movie ready for release some time in 2008, so it looks like Mr. Rodriguez will have to get moving pretty quickly on this project. He'll be collaborating with "Casino Royale" screenwriters Neal Purvis and Robert Wade to modernize the classic French comic book character.

Jean-Claude Forest's comic was adapted into a 1968 Roger Vadim film that starred a very young and very adorable Jane Fonda. No word yet on who'll be playing the title character this time around, but R.R. is known for his taste in leading ladies, so let's just wait and see. (For a while there, it looked like the gig belonged to director Peter Webber, but it seems like it's all Rob's now.)

"I love this iconic character and all that she represents, and I'm truly excited by the challenge of inviting a new audience into her universe," is what Rodriguez had to say. De Laurentiis echoes the sentiments: "In our vision, the future is female, and I can't wait to introduce 'Barbarella' to a new generation of moviegoers."

Why? BECAUSE!

Robert is the ONLY dude that has successfully made a campy movie ultra cool and hilarious.

It may be a step down from Planet Terror (his best film) but it should be awesome with him directing and co-writing.

Does this mean sin city 2 gets pushed back further? I also saw today Jolie wants to take a year off acting. Is that movie ever gonna get made at this point?

I heard he was going to do it without her.

Robert can direct effectively and fast so I wouldn't be suprised if he can pump out Sin City 2 before.

He's directed TWO movies in one year several times.

I hope they have Jane Fonda in a cameo. It would be fitting.

planet terror is RR's best film? i'd have to say i disagree.....i think el mariachi would be above an homage to exploitation

El Mariachi is his third best in my opinion. It's good, it even stands up today but its extremely low budget does hold it from being a classic in my opinion.

1.) Planet Terror 2.) Sin City 3.) El Mariachi

I THINK THIS IS BULLSHIT!!!
WHY DO THEY KEEP DELAYING SIN CITY 2 MORE AND MORE??? IT'S PISSING ME OFF!!! I SAW FRANK MILLER SHOULD JUST DIRECT IT HIMSELF!!! Then again I sure he doesn't have quite the right filming equipment unlike Robert Rodriguez. I saw they should just forget about Angelina Jolie and just concentrate on getting Sin City 2 made damn it! There is no reason why they shouldn't be making it! SO FORGET ALL THAT OTHER CRAP AND GET TO WORK ON SIN CITY 2!!!

El Mariachi is Rodriguez's best film. There's really no argument any other way. The quality that he pumped out for only a few thousand dollars is amazing and easily trumps the glitzy Sin Ciy, which I enjoyed quite a bit, but still.

Okay that's fine. And I guess you just watch low budget movies and rare titles that stay out of the mainstream because they make you feel special. Ah, how cute.

If you watch his commentary on El Mariachi he explains all the flaws. There are a LOT of flaws. It's still a good movie but with 10 or 20,000 dollars more it could have been done correctly. Sorry, but when a dead girl flinches it ruins a film.

He knows his technique and he's quite wise, but his execusion is indeed about being sloppy. Planet Terror fits into that kind of filmmaking much better.

Could be worse news I guess, and at least we can probably trust Rodriguez to keep the sexual tones of the original intact. Still, I'm not quite sure he's the man for the job, and I'm hoping this doesn't mean we'll see Rose McGowan in space.

And please, Robert, don't make this entire thing on your computer...

agreed. enough already with the fucking remakes. if hollywood is that bereft of new ideas, they could at least start adapting many worthwhile books which are out there.

Well, at least he's not doing The Jetsons, but it really is about time for him to get at Sin City 2 and leave the boob movies to boob directors such as Bay.

Well they just sold one more ticket, I didn't really care about this at all before, but if Rodriguez is doing it I'm there. But yeah I want the Sin City movies more of course.
