[VIDEO ESSAY] "Skyfall" stands as one more shrewd blast of cinema ecstasy in a long history of compelling 007 spy movies.
Wow I didn't think he'd like it, let alone giving it a perfect score. Still one of my least favorite critics out there next to Armond, Rex reed, and pretty much anyone from slant magazine.
Oct 31 - 03:42 PM
Actually he gives A+'s too. So not a perfect score.
Nov 4 - 09:19 AM
It says 5/5 though on his website. o_0

I'm usually quite happy when tough critics give something a perfect rating, that usually increase my faith that the film will be great.

Outdated director, oudated movie, I think They didnt see action films nowadays. We are exepecting BOND movie.. who vl give.. for the last 3 movies of Daniel are waste movies... Might be story is good, but Its not James Bond movie....
Nov 1 - 07:54 AM
You don't know Bond my friend...
Nov 4 - 04:44 PM
what the hell does "outdated director" or "outdated movie" mean? you sound like such a pretentious douche who wants to sound intelligent
Nov 4 - 06:00 PM
This is the Armond White Effect. Every once in a while White would give a fresh rating to a big movie that everybody thought he was going to hate.
This way it makes Cole look like he's actually legit. It's perfect troll tactics.
Nov 1 - 12:36 PM
People keep hating on Mr. Smithey and one comment even compared him to Armond White. Either that or they say he's a tough critic.
I don't know... I looked at his RT page and he agrees with the tomatometer 78% of the time. That's very good, not contrarian at all. And he has given out plenty of As and A+s. Sure, he gave rottens to Looper and Argo, but he has far more ratings that I agree with. He's not THAT bad.
Rex Reed, on the other hand, IS terrible.
Nov 1 - 01:13 PM
They are both bald. Coincidence? I think not.
Nov 2 - 08:44 AM
Smithey has given negative reviews to The Master, Argo, Looper and Dark Knight Rises. Four of the better films of the year, all of which were loved by critics.
His fresh meter is high so he can keep his cover as a respected critic. If he hated everything, then it would be too easy to see through him.
Nov 2 - 08:48 AM
The Master was divisive and TDKR disappointed many people. I liked them both but I can understand why people wouldn't. On the other hand, he gave perfect scores to The Turin Horse, Killing Them Softly, and Amour. So he obviously just has a thing for non-mainstream filmmaking, and nothing is wrong with that (even then, he gave Frankenweenie an A too). And again, 78% is very high. It isn't just "doing well enough to keep a cover."
Nov 2 - 10:55 AM
Look at his quick ratings, he has over 1,000, and he agrees with the meter on almost all of them. I guarantee if it weren't for those quick ratings his agreement with the meter would be a lot lower, how do you think Emanuel Levy has such a high agreement percentage with the meter?
Nov 2 - 10:10 PM
Hey, no hating on the 'stache. But yeah, people mention that a lot as to why he has a 78% agreement ratings. I think he just, mostly, dislikes contemporary films, but loves the classics.
Nov 5 - 10:11 AM
Lol sorry, yea that's true.
Nov 6 - 04:48 AM
He only agrees 78% of the time because he reviews classic movies, so he always likes them and they always have fresh ratings.
Nov 4 - 09:21 AM
Yes. He does agree %78 of the time. However, he purposefully gives rotten reviews to 90% of major fresh movies like Toy Story 3, Looper, etc
Nov 5 - 11:45 AM
Nov 5 - 11:46 AM
I agree with Mohammed...all four times.
