Except that he points out several times that because of the chokehold Mormans have on that area, several things wouldn't have happened that were key points or just good filler.

I think they were trying to convey what it was like for alienated youth in 1980's America. Salt Lake City is probably one of the best settings for this film because the differences between the punks and everyone else is greater then most cities.

I agree with the TheeDude. To story of punk friends in 'SLC' in the 80s is the whole point of the movie. If it was some other(bigger) city the story would have been totally different.
