This is a coming-of-age story about a young girl in 1970's Beverly Hills who must come to terms with her family's constantly changing residences as well as trying to control her budding sexuality. Marisa Tomei is a cousin who comes to visit, adding even more mayhem to the proceedings. Jenkins' debut obviously strikes a few personal chords, which elevates this above the usual indie-fare. [More]

Reviews for Slums of Beverly Hills
Not much humor here. The statement about white trash is lost in an incest subplot. Just a mess.
Despite showing that she has a talent for writing clever dialogue, Jenkins quickly loses control over the story's direction.
It’s hard for me to sympathize with people I don’t like, and except for Lyonne’s character I didn’t like anyone in the story.
The snack food equivalent of film -- it satisfies for a while, but it doesn't fill you up in the long run.
Really, it sounds more intriguing than it is. Nothing really happens.
There's an alchemy that can transform personal experience into a great film, but it was nowhere nearby when Tamara Jenkins wrote and directed this lacklustre first feature.
Lyonne's splendid efforts are undermined by the scattered focus on other characters, who are well-acted but too much of a distraction.
I wish Jenkins had showed more faith in Murray and Vivian. Like the Abramowitzes themselves, she doesn't seem to know how good she really has it.
Ms. Jenkins developed her script at the Sundance Institute -- hence Robert Redford's name as executive producer -- but her quirky humor is quite heavy-handed and she needs to learn how to do some judicious editing.
This is standard coming-of-age stuff padded out with quirky humour, chick bonding, and memorable eccentrics.
Coming-of-age films don't get any warmer, funnier, raunchier, or more endearing than Tamara Jenkins's brightly feisty memoir, 'Slums of Beverly Hills'.
There's nothing better than being surprised by a film that does more than you expect.
