Paramount & Nickelodeon to Smurf a Smurf Movie
by Scott Weinberg | July 19, 2005
Discuss Article
Less than a day after an all-new CGI version of "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" was confirmed, word comes from Variety that an all-new CGI version of "The Smurfs" will hit multiplexes in 2008.

Although the Smurfs are best known from their 1980s cartoon adventures, the characters actually go all the way back to 1958, when they were a part of Peyo Culliford's Belgian comic strip. The 2008 release date will commemorate the tiny blue buggers' 50th anniversary.

Screenwriter Herb Ratner has been enlisted to pen the smurfplay, although the plot is presently being kept under tight wraps.

Not at all surprisingly, Paramount and Nickelodeon are planning for the first movie to kick-start a three-chapter smurfogy.

This is too smurfy for words. As a child of the 80's I can't wait to see how this turns out. I remember watching the Smurfs every Saturday along with Super Friends, Turbo Teen and Pandemonium. This will definitely be a film I'll bring my kids to. Oh, wait. I don't have kids. Guess I'll just go see it anyway. Speaking of the Smurfs, does anyone know of any plans to bring "The Smurfs & the Magic Flute" to DVD?

Hmm... Herb Ratner? I wonder if he's any relation to that other Ratner who's directing X-Men 3?
Isn't it a bit late for a smurf movie? Looks to me like the smurf craze finished some time ago. Mind you, I still have a smurf pillow-case kicking around in my cupboard. We found it in a playpark when I was six.

Yes!! However, it will stink to have all new voices, since all the good ones are now gone. I want smurfs on DVD. Papa Smurf is the original cartoon Pimp, man.

Look at the resurgence of 80's TV.

Dukes of Hazzard (Movie looks bad though)
Transformers
Smurfs

A-team (2006 supposedly)

We just need MacGyver, Knight Rider, and GoBots, and I'll be set. Too bad they already screwed up Inspector Gadget by making it live action.

Well, they made Leornard Part 6 with Bill Cosby. Is that close enough? I heard it tanked something terrible, mind you.
