Nicolas Cage stars as Atlantic City detective Ritchie Santoro (his explosive energy and flashy clothes mirror the tone of the film), who finds himself heading a high-level investigation after the U.S. secretary of defense is assassinated at the championship fight he's attending. Ritchie's old pal Naval Commander Kevin Dunne (Gary Sinise) was assigned to guard the secretary and now fears for his career. A mysterious beautiful woman in white (Carla Gugino) has something to do with the case but is lost amid the 14,000 spectators trapped in the sealed-off arena crime scene. Meanwhile, a raging hurricane is tearing up the boardwalk outside, and as Ritchie begins to unravel the mystery through the casino's massive camera security system, he discovers truths he'd just as soon not have known about. Taking place almost entirely within the confines of the arena and casino on a single dark and stormy night, SNAKE EYES zips along merrily, delivering loads of glitzy atmosphere and fun, Hichcock-style suspense. The appropriately Bernard Herrmann-esque music score is by Ryuichi Sakamoto. [More]

I don't think that there's anything in this film that really doesn't work.

Director Brian De Palma does his stylish best to weave the patchy script into a cinematic quilt, but despite his best efforts -- and they're often formidable -- the thing just doesn't cohere.

What might have been fascinating after a while becomes frustrating and, finally, a real slog.

An intelligent and modestly-scaled thriller which, if it doesn't quite recall the classic Hollywood days of yore, it comes desperately close.

Trabalhando com um cenário relativamente limitado, De Palma constrói uma história envolvente e ágil.

Snake Eyes is a technical tour de force, sadly lacking in one important element - surprise and tension.

De Palma makes the mistake of revealing the mastermind behind an assassination conspiracy before the movie is half over, thus leaving himself with nothing to work with.

The truth is that De Palma is less a persuasive artist than he is a simple and vulgar bully.

DePalma's overuse of his point of view shots, especially his out-of-focus sequences with his nearsighted damsel in distress, adds nothing to the proceedings.

If you were to review Brian De Palma's Snake Eyes in just one word, it would have to be the sound of air being let out of a balloon: Pfffffffft.

Snake Eyes so quickly disintegrates into formula, and the characters into caricatures, that it completely loses steam by the halfway mark.

After the premise settles in the dust just as it should, the movie crumbles into one big mess where the characters spurt out some incredibly dumb dialogue and act like they are in some sort of Spice Girls music video.

The second half of the film plays out a weak-kneed chase yarn that's staged and structured so halfheartedly you wonder why the filmmakers bothered at all.

The picture is a small-scale symphony of kinetic camera movements, rapid-fire montage sequences, split-screen effects, and long-lasting shots that allow characters and settings to interact more artfully than happens in less-imaginatively filmed movies.
