A.O. Scott, you are one of my fave critics and I look to you as a genuine authority on film, but your exceedingly generous review of this film makes me question why. This is hands down one of the absolute worst, most inept films I have ever seen. Seriously, it's little more than a series of vaguely connected dramatic sequences strung together with virtually no regard for continuity or character motivation. The script is a mess. The characters have no reason to exist other than to either a. provide a source of villainy, or b. connect the story to the classic version with which most viewers will be familiar. The dwarves are terrible. All supporting characters are terrible. Kristen Stewart is superterrible. The chemistry she "shares" with Chris Hemsworth could most charitably be described as inert. The whole affair made me simultaneously sad and angry. An utterly incohesive and pointless mess.
