RT on DVD & Blu-Ray: Snow White and the Huntsman

Wow, not a single FRESH choice this week. I like Greta Gerwig, but not enough to check out her newest, even if it sounds far more palatable than GIRL IN PROGRESS. Seriously, as "hot" as some of her pundits like to press, Eva Mendes is one of the absolute worst actresses I've seen so long as I have been watching movies. Practically all of her films I've disliked or hatedl the one exception would be TRAINING DAY; thankfully, she keeps her damn mouth shut, displaying skin in place of skill). Seriously, there are few actresses nowadays that I think is worse than Mendes.

Hopefully Mendes will redeem herself with "Holy Motors". But I liked her in"Out of Time", "We Own the Night", "Bad Lietenant: POC", and I might be the only poster on RT who enjoyed "The Spirit", but I have no shame about it. I won't deny she's very beautiful either. (Go for yourself, Gosling!)

Despite all the good reviews, I have not seen BAD LIEUTENANT yet; OOT and WOTN were ok movies when she wasn't onscreen I thought. I dunno, I guess I'm sick of these women being cast for their beauty over their acting skills; I know, Hollywood will never shy away from it, which is why Megan Fox, Jessica Biel and Brooklyn Decker keep getting overpaid jobs. That's why I tell guys to save money and buy pin-up calenders instead of watching them onscreen. Also, I will admit that I vowed never to give Mendes another chance after her atrocious turn in Diane English's remake of THE WOMEN, where she came off as an embarrassment in the role Joan Crawford owned in the original.

"Beyond the Black Rainbow" is definitely my must see for this week. I've been waiting to see it for several months. I also am interested in "Lola Vs". Gerwig is an irresistable actress even if I tend to not enjoy her movies very much ("Greenberg" and mumblecore, even the ones whe writes and directs herself). But still she has an alluring vulnerability that makes her fascinating to watch without having to flaunt her sexuality (although her nudity is refreshingly plastic-free). Plus I recently rewatched her "Nights and Weekends" and found myself more sympathetic to her neurosis than the first time. Anyway, it's bound to be a better portrait of femininity than "Snow White", and with less Piss Hemsworth.

I reviewed NIGHTS AND WEEKENDS for DVD Verdict (.com) and was really surprised at how much I liked it, although not enough to watch the other mumblecore stuff. In fact, that's where I discovered Gerwig, who is an indie princess in so many ways; that being said, I might catch LOLA VERSUS on Netflix rather than waste $2.66 for an overnight rental.

Charlize was actually great in Snow White and the Huntsman, unfortunately the quality of her performance just served to highlight the inadequacy of Kristin Stewart in the acting department. Props to Chris Hemsworth though for holding his own amongst that cast. Dude, might be the real deal.

Holy God, Beyond The Black Rainbow!

Snow White has been reported to be looking fabulous on BD. One of my critic friends says he likes it for being this generation's Labyrinth/Dark Crystal, a dark fairy tale you can show to your kids and that they will remember. I would like it if our children has an image of Snow White as a sword-wielding warrior (see also: Mirror Mirror)instead of the usual.
