"Sofie" is a study of one woman's great disappointments and small pleasures in late 19th-century Denmark. Bound by her family and by Jewish culture, Sofie is poised at the edge of spinsterhood. She yearns for the kind of happy marriage her mother and father enjoy, but when she begins a romance with a gentile painter her parents steadfastly forbid the union. As an alternative, they suggest she wed a distant relative. Unwilling to go against tradition and family, Sofie ends the affair. Her marriage, however, proves loveless, and the once-hopeful Sofie fulfills herself by doting on her son and trifling with her brother-in-law. But after much tragedy and heartache, Sofie will discover that her son has the strength to do what she herself could not: break with the past and find his own form of happiness. [More]
