Movie Info

The seed for Fine Arts' Sold for Marriage was sown when producer D.W. Griffith unearthed a bit of early American history about a slave ship, containing a "cargo" of white women from Europe, disembarking in the South. Lillian Gish plays Marfa, a feisty Russian peasant girl. To escape the advances of cruel Cossack chieftain Griegoff (Walter Long), Marfa boards a ship to the United States. Upon arrival, the heroine's mercenary relatives arrange for her to be sold for whatever purpose her new "owner" deems fit. In her case, she is sold for marriage to a wealthy but brutish older man (William Seibert). Happily, Marfa is rescued from the fate by fellow immigrant Jan (Frank Bennett).more
