Some Kind of Wonderful belongs to that early Hughes period before his depictions of the American teen experience became canned and cynical.

A sensitive loner, he prefers to work on his art over going to sporting events and hanging with the cool crowd. Instead, he platonically whiles away the hours with Watts (Mary Stuart Masterson), the pixieish drummer girl he's known since grade school. But Keith does have one popular obsession: Amanda Jones (Lea Thompson), the most desired girl in school--and girlfriend of obnoxious rich guy Hardy Jens (Craig Scheffer). When Hardy and Amanda part ways, Keith finally has his chance---and true blue Watts will do all that she can, even it that means biting her tongue and suppressing her true feelings for her longtime friend. John Hughes' follow-up to the classic PRETTY IN PINK takes essentially the same story and flips the gender roles, with another positive "follow-your-heart" message and a great soundtrack featuring the Jesus & Mary Chain, Flesh For Lulu, and the March Violets. Reviews for Some Kind of Wonderful
Often regarded as the forgotten stepchild of cult favorite Pretty in Pink, Some Kind of Wonderful is notable in that it’s an improvement over its inspiration in every conceivable capacity.
This movie manages to leave its mark on everyone who watches and desires to be taken back to a time where having some kind of wonderful meant everything.
Like her energy, Masterson's beauty is kinetic, internalized, and she's a winner even if the film itself runs third in the Hughes opus on teenhood.
Some Kind of Wonderful is yet another film in which Hughes and his team show a special ability to make an entertaining movie about teenagers.
