Movie Info

Someday This Pain Will Be Useful to You is a heart warming, funny and passionate portrait of a confused New York teenager, James Sveck, played by up-and-coming star Toby Regbo, and his loving, eccentric and dysfunctional family. James's staunch non-conformism leads him to teenage mistakes that are hard to undo. This cliche-ridden coming of age story is as painfully awkward as its troubled teen protagonist.

His pain may be useful to James someday, but to viewers, it's annoying right here and now.

These 2-D characters might as well be wearing T-shirts that say things like "Predatory College Professor" and "Self-Obsessed Father" on them.

The film is a pleasant watch, filled with nice little moments of comedy and tenderness, and optimistic about the fate of dreamers who happen to be a little slow out of the starting gate.

Listless coming-of-age drama about teen's ho-hum "problems."

The film takes itself too seriously while it tackles familiar territory.

It's not exactly a trainwreck of a movie, but Someday This Pain is so void of depth and meaning, it often resembles a parody of the bruised teen subgenre.

The actors work overtime to make this would-be sensitive study of troubled youth work, but are undone by the windy triteness of the script.

Roberto Faenza shoots his Manhattan-set action with a glossiness that's as bland as the soundtrack ballads.

Audience Reviews for Someday This Pain Will Be Useful to You

Whilst the books inspires and enlightens, the movie fell flat.

This filmed touched me in ways no other has. Every actor in this film is highly talented and they make the film even more exciting to watch. The shots of NYC are amazing and the music is dead on. Faenza and Heyman did an excellent job in writing a screenplay that is effective and persuasive. I left this movie with a new perspective on love and relationships, which is exactly what I look for in a film.

    1. Nanette: Be patient and strong, someday this pain will be useful to you.

    1. James: I wish the whole day were like breakfast, when people are still connected to their dreams, focused inward, and not yet ready to engage with the world around them. I realized this is how I am all day; for me, unlike other people, there doesn't come a moment after a cup of coffee or a shower or whatever when I suddenly feel alive and awake and connected to the world. If it were always breakfast, I would be fine.
