Something for Joey (1977)
My Rating: 8/10
I remember watching this movie as a kid. A very, very long time ago. It was playing on ESPN Classic this past weekend and I tuned in and felt the same feeling I did as a kid. If a movie can make you cry, this is the movie. Was it well produced? Well, for a 1977 movie it was, well? produced. It could be so much powerful today if it was redone. Hey, maybe I should redo it! ?Something for Joey? is a true story about the relationship between Penn State football player John Cappelletti and his younger brother Joey, who has leukemia. Comparable to films like ?Bryan?s Song,? it?s sad-sad-sad. The story stressed the relationship between John and Joey and how John cared for his little brother so much, Joey turned out to be his inspiration as a person fighting with leukemia. It?s a very touching story.
They used real footage of John Cappelletti playing football. The ESPN broadcast also showed the real Heisman Trophy award speech that John delivered when he won the Heisman. Mark Singer, who played John Cappeletti, did a really good job but it meant a lot more when you saw the real John Cappeletti deliever the speech for real.
If you can catch it on ESPN that would be ideal ? because of the interviews with actors and the real characters in between scenes. It?s a great movie.
Be ready to choke up and cry.
