In "In Order Not to Be Here," Stratman traces the eerie empty spaces of suburbia at night, a world of walls and vacant lots and surveillance cameras and glowing neon. With a soundtrack full of police reports and radio static, the short film creates a sensation of unease, as if something terrible has taken place just beyond the perimeter of the image. The ghost of a narrative appears in the film as repeated images show a lone figure (shot from above in infrared) fleeing through the night as if being pursued. "Kings of the Sky," a more conventional documentary, follows a troupe of Chinese tightrope walkers as they tour the Taklamakan desert. "From Hetty to Nancy" travels to Iceland to explore the juxtaposition between mundane everyday existence and the colossal and catastrophic forces of nature present in this remoter region of the Earth. As a whole, these films are a testament to the elusive and mysterious vision of a remarkable film-artist. [More]
