Something's Gotta Give may not be as good as it gets, but it's an intelligent, funny look at relationships with a great performance by Diane Keaton.

In the sparkling comedy SOMETHING'S GOTTA GIVE directed by Nancy Meyers (WHAT WOMEN WANT), divorced, successful playwright Erica Barry (Diane Keaton) has given up on finding a fulfilling romantic relationship. When her beautiful young daughter Marin (Amanda Peet) visits the family's Hamptons home with her aging, lothario boyfriend Harry Sanborn (Jack Nicholson), Erica's plight as a mature, single woman comes into stark focus. Harry exclusively dates young women, which infuriates Erica. Though initially they repel each other, things change when Harry has a heart attack and Erica comes to his aid. The two make peace and discover a smoldering attraction to one another. However, love never comes without complications. Harry still has a romantic obligation to Marin, and Erica gets a taste of Harry's lifestyle when the sexy young doctor Julian (Keanu Reeves) hits on her. Whether Erica and Harry can reconcile their differences provides the premise for an elegant, touching, and amusing tale. In their first movie together since REDS, Keaton and Nicholson share natural chemistry, each giving powerful and moving performances under Meyers' expert direction. [More]

Reviews for Something's Gotta Give
Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton show how romantic chemistry can make champagne.
While there's a lot to be said for a serious deep-think piece, and a raw, independent film can be invigorating, nothing quite matches a slick, gleaming Hollywood production when it's done right -- and when it's smart. And this one twinkles with smarts.
Keaton nails every laugh and nuance in this tart, terrific romantic comedy.
There's just not enough substance here to make for anything other than a dippy feel-good comedy that pokes fun at what often happens in real life -- people around the same age can fall in love.
[Keaton and Nicholson's] chemistry, taking a page from Viagra, is likely to get a rise out of people.
Nicholson and Keaton do what they can to compensate for the script's weaknesses, which is actually quite a bit. Even without age-specific dialogue to help them out, they manage to suggest a strong connection between their characters.
A flabby and predictable romantic comedy made watchable by Nicholson's ability to turn fluff into confessional, and the charismatic daring of his co-star, Diane Keaton, who also wrests something personal from a formulaic script.
It's about time the mature woman got the romantic upper hand, making Something's Gotta Give a long time coming.
While the film won't drive you delirious with suspense about where it's going, the journey is pleasant enough.
There is so much here that you've just gotta love that, when it gets around to the stuff that you just can't, you've gotta give it slack anyway.
True, it may be viewed as a fantasy for older, single women. Yet it's not cheap and superficial. It makes us laugh and think and feel.
Meyers has written a killer story about grown-ups, risk-taking, passion and vulnerability and more or less disguised it all as a romantic comedy.
Keaton gives her best performance since her Oscar turn in Annie Hall.
This contrived fantasy has a few funny moments, but the wish-fulfillment factor is its draw.
A well-felt celebration of romantic, emotional and physical maturity, filled with laughs and tears. It’s also something of a revelation when it comes to Diane Keaton’s range.
Not surprisingly, the two exceptional leads work better than the movie that contains them.
Keaton really is terrific, and her elegant Erica is one of the most endearingly sweet screen characters to come along in quite some time.
[Keaton and Nicholson] bring so much experience, knowledge and humor to their characters that the film works in ways the screenplay might not have even hoped for.
