In the sparkling comedy SOMETHING'S GOTTA GIVE directed by Nancy Meyers (WHAT WOMEN WANT), divorced, successful playwright Erica Barry (Diane Keaton) has given up on finding a fulfilling romantic relationship. When her beautiful young daughter Marin (Amanda Peet) visits the family's Hamptons home with her aging, lothario boyfriend Harry Sanborn (Jack Nicholson), Erica's plight as a mature, single woman comes into stark focus. Harry exclusively dates young women, which infuriates Erica. Though initially they repel each other, things change when Harry has a heart attack and Erica comes to his aid. The two make peace and discover a smoldering attraction to one another. However, love never comes without complications. Harry still has a romantic obligation to Marin, and Erica gets a taste of Harry's lifestyle when the sexy young doctor Julian (Keanu Reeves) hits on her. Whether Erica and Harry can reconcile their differences provides the premise for an elegant, touching, and amusing tale. In their first movie together since REDS, Keaton and Nicholson share natural chemistry, each giving powerful and moving performances under Meyers' expert direction. [More]

Reviews for Something's Gotta Give
A textbook example of how star power alone can sometimes shore up a rickety vehicle.
Keaton overcomes the convenience and contrivances of Meyers' script to bring out the best in the predictable scenario, not to mention in Nicholson.
Meyers takes a quantum leap forward from such feeble fluff as Father of the Bride and I Love Trouble.
Nicholson smirks his way through one of the limpest, phoned-in performances he's given in years.
With the likes of Nicholson, Keaton, Reeves and Peet -- and a fleeting, funny few minutes with McDormand -- Something's Gotta Give is never less than entertaining.
All the romantic comedy cues are firmly in place, buttressed by none of the substance.
With a surprisingly resonant emotional undercurrent, this adult relationship comedy comes off as extremely likable, if not lovable.
Nicholson, with his swagger and cunning, and Keaton, with her nerves and off-kilter timing, show us why the old-style romantic comedies worked and why they can work just as well in an age of sexual candor.
Something's Gotta Give can be formulaic, but watching the incandescent Nicholson and Keaton, all loose and funny and sharing jokes about reading glasses, is a rare treat.
Always surfing the edge of trite, but nonetheless essentially entertaining, the picture weakens due to an elongated resolution and predicted bow-tied ending.
Nancy Meyers is like some grandma who keeps hugging you harder than you want to be hugged.
Nicholson and Keaton aren't done justice by the picture's...extraneous, elongated twists and turns of the heart on its way to the pat ending you always knew would come.
The stars may be acting royalty, but their joint vehicle is the cinematic equivalent of cheap costume jewelry.
It's really no more than a coy wish list for all the women who ever wanted to bring Jack Nicholson to heel.
Sending up Jack Nicholson’s real-life penchant for dating younger women, Something’s Gotta Give benefits greatly from his rascally screen presence.
We're not only watching Diane Keaton's character regaining her sexuality. We're watching Diane Keaton regaining her status as one of Hollywood's most winsome leading ladies.
