If everything works out the way it's supposed to, Samuel L. Jackson and Bernie Mac will be bringing some vintage Stax soul to the big screen.

According to a report posted at Variety over the weekend, the stars will lead a project titled Soul Men. No, it isn't a sequel to C. Thomas Howell's Soul Man -- it's a comedy in which estranged backup singers (played by Jackson and Mac, natch) agree to set aside 20 years of bickering for a tour in honor of a deceased bandmate.

Classic soul fans will be interested to hear that, according to the article, "the film is negotiating for access to the Stax Records catalog," and "both Jackson and Mac will dance and sing." Perhaps less encouraging is the news that Soul Men will be scripted by Robert Ramsey and Matthew Stone, the team that brought you Man of the House.

Variety reports that the studio will select a director "within the next two weeks," and will begin production early next year.
