Consensus: Spawn is an overbearing, over-violent film that adds little to the comic book adaptation genre.

Reviews for Spawn
Everything here, from the opening titles to the closing credits (themselves liberally filched from Seven), is too much.
The movie belongs to Jai White, whose eyes, voice and movements lock the audience into his heart and struggle.
This hopelessly redundant action gross-out aspires to a form of hip vacuousness -- and may achieve it.
Spawn is a far from perfect movie, but interesting enough to make me look forward to the inevitable sequel.
... Spawn delivers as much eye candy as the best, but not nearly as much substance.
For all its state-of-the-art effects, the movie feels deeply derivative, from the thrash score to the designer-goth decor.
... the filmmakers filled their film with tons of FX, leaving little place to action scenes.
Spawn the movie is every bit as violent, ugly, and stupid as Spawn the comic.
It didn't reach the heights of my personal favorite comic adaptation, The Crow, but it wasn't directed by Schumacher either, that's for damn sure.
... an incoherent blitz of noise, chintzy special effects and bargain-basement allegory.
