I think the DB5 is WAYYYY more iconic than herbie, the general lee, and the mach 5. Think about it. 50 Most Memorable MOVIE CARS. Mach 5 and General Lee both came before in they're tv series and herbie, well Lohan ruined that for most fans.

I Agree with the De Lorean at that no. 1 spot, but the DB5 should have had that no. 2.

Nice list, M!
Although I have to admit I would have put Christine and the Eco 1 higher than Speed Racer and The General Lee which, as pointed out before, were really TV cars. And if TV cars are included, Kitt should be in the top ten!

Nice list, especially the delorian for #1.

But I have to disagree with the inclusion of the General Lee. You said in the intro you were leaving out TV cars, and while yes, it was in the movie, the car is only famous because of the TV show and not the turd of a movie. If it were only in the movie it wouldn't be on this list at all. Seems like you guys are bending your own rules.

There was a brief debate about whether or not to include cars that started on TV (the General Lee, Starsky's Gran Torino, the Mach 5), but we ultimately decided to include them. Our reasoning was that if a successful TV actor (i.e. Neil Patrick Harris) appears in a movie or two, is he still just a TV star? And even though the Mach 5 and the General Lee were primarily TV cars, they were definitely treated as stars of their respective (big-budget) films. And we figured it's more of an oversight to leave them out, rather than include them.

jokerboy, I LOVED Speed Racer. I've never disagreed personally with the Tomatometer so strongly. Unless you have the heart of a cynic (like 65 % of critics at the moment), you'll enjoy it. And there's enough Racer X to make a Matthew Fox fan weep. You know what's interesting about Matthew Fox? EVERYTHING.

The Aston Martin DB5 is a machine of great beauty. I want one. Very very much. Great list Matchity. If you are into car movies, I recommend digging out an obscure, early Peter Weir Aussie flick called The Cars that Ate Paris. It scored 50% on the Tomatometer and it is very very weird and very very black but the cars are an experience! In trivia interesting probably only to myself, it was filmed in a tiny, one road Aussie town where I spent part of my childhood.

The movies made after TV shows such as Dukes of Hazzard were horrible and if the movie was to stand alone the car wouldn't be famous at all and should not be considered for a car in the top ten. Ok now that I'm done venting with a run on sentance, I loved the rest of the list. Awesome that the Batmobile made it on the list three times (thank God you didn't include the Batman and Robin Batmobile). Personally Christine should have been higher on the list. #47, there are obviously no Muscle car fans here. That is not a 71 Camero, it is either a 67 or a 68 (can't see the tail lights) Those were the only two years that had the fake hood vents, and only the first gen Chevy f-bodys had that nose with the hideaway lights. 70 and on had fixed lights. Do a Google search before you post something guys.

RT guys- I gotta say, I was starting to think that whenever you guys can't find anything to write about, you just pound out a list.

I wanted to apologize, because this list was really COOL, from reminding me about a lot of the movie cars of my childhood to giving the actual identity of the cars. Dunno that the order matters to me all that much, but I was VERY happy to see the Delorean and the General Lee so high.

And regarding the Lamborghini, that was eerily accurate: I was an early-teenage boy in the 80's and I spent hours drooling over my brother's poster of a white Countach.

Hats off.

Here's one, but only for honorable mention though. "Stripes" had the EM-50 Urban Assault Vehicle, which was actually just a 70's GMC mobile home. Except that it was decked out with armored sides/windows, a rocket launcher, a flame-thrower, and also comfortably seated a whole, kidnapped POW platoon. Sorry though, the drill sargeant has to ride on the roof.

Loved it, and the movie, but probably not a TOP 50.

p.s. Read RT daily for awhile now, but only just registered today so that I could leave this comment. Had to bring the info to the masses, though.

The De Lorean in first is great, its a classic pop culture car.

Herbie si cool, but not top 5 by far, its a frikken beatle that most people may not know due to it being a crappy movie at that.

Mach 5? Its not a real working car, most of these other cars are street legal cars, this thing is a prototype and 95% computer animation.

The General Lee and Torino are classics, in the classic shows. These movies were pure garbage and the cars don't stand the originals. Why not have Mork's car on the list if these two are on it.

Lastly, WTF THE TRUCK FROM DUEL. Sure its a TV Movie but theres TV show remakes tossed here too. A truck that would make you crap your draws is never something to leave off the list. You have vans, cartoons and others, why not the most awesome truck ever.

Top 10:
1) Bullitt's Mustang
2) De Lorean
3) Blues Mobile (Who Can't Quote the Features on this Baby)
4) Bond's Aston
5) Duel's Truck
6) Greased Lightning
7) Bat-Mobile (1989)
8) Lotus
9) Ferris' Ferrari
10) Mirth Mobile

I was delighted to see the Alfa Romeo from "The Graduate" make the list.

Hey Steve,

You're absolutely right; anytime you present a list like this, people will have disagreements. Everyone brings their own experiences to this sort of list, and so that definitely affects the perceptions about placement and such. More than anything else, the list is a measure of how famous certain cars are to the general public. So cars like Bullitt's Mustang, for instance, get placed lower on the list because even though it's really, really well known to car lovers, we don't believe that it's that famous to the rest of the general public. And it was also a tough call on both Eleanors and both sets of Minis, but ultimately we figured they all should be on the list.

I should also mention that this isn't a ranking of awesomeness - that would be a wildly different list.

Great and extensive list. Someone did some real research(!), but you missed one car that became as much as star and the movie (in the 1960s). The movie was "Harold and Maude" and the car was Harold's 1961-ish Jaguar XKE 'shooting break' (aka, station wagon).

Also, a car that was even the title of the movie (in the mid-1950s) was "The Solid Gold Cadillac". The car was a 1956 Cadillac convertible painted brilliant gold.

Great job on this Tomoato list however. I enjoyed it very much.

1. Did you guys say that the Mirthmobile ISN'T cool?? *smacks you upside the head*

2. Having the Batmobile on the list three times seems a bit excessive (I would've just grouped them in one spot), but I guess it's understandable since they're all different models.

3. The only notable omission, off the top of my head, is Kaneda's motorcycle from Akira...But of course, that's not an actual car. Duh. Still, as a kick-*** movie vehicle/roadster in general, it should've deserved an honorable mention somehow.

Other than all of that, it was a damn fine list! The Ecto-One, the DeLorean, the Mirthmobile, all my faves...Awesome.

They said right in the introduction that only cars from movies - or movies based on TV shows - were considered towards the list, thus the omission of the A-Team van & KITT (they even mentioned those two as an example).

Judge Dredd's motorcycle is...Well, a motorcycle. Not a full-fledged car. Besides, if we had to pick only one motorcycle for an honorable mention, then screw Dredd, once again I say that props should be given to Kaneda's motorcycle from Akira.

Iron Man had some cool cars...But I doubt wrecking one up really shows off its potential. No real car-centric scenes = No mention.

For about 14 years, I owned one of the original Gran Torinos from "Starsky & Hutch." It still had the ownership plate from 20th Fox welded into the engine compartment, and plenty of dents/damage from several years of filming.
My advice to anyone who wants to own a movie/TV car is: be prepared for a lot of idiot motorists to make "clever" comments whenever they spot you in or near the car (I certainly underestimated that response); build up a big bank account, because unless you buy the car completely restored, it will nickel and dime you to death.

I think the following cars should have at least gotten honorable mentions:

The Electric SUV's from Jurassic Park
The Weasly's Flying Muggle Car from The Harry Potter Series
The Ford P.O.S. from Men In Black
Lightning McQueen from Cars
Benny the Cab from Who Framed Roger Rabbit
The flying police cruiser from Blade Runner
The Flintstone's Car
The bus from Speed
Miss Daisy's car from Driving Miss Daisy
The RV from Stripes

The Dodge concept from The Wraith? The Barris built ZZR Spy Car from the 1966 movie Out Of Sight. Two built Buick engines...what's not to like?

Bandit's Trans-Am is definitely worthy of the list.

Being a former Firebird owner I have to correct your entry.
The image you've posted is actually of the Bandit II a 1980 Trans-Am and not the original bandit which should be a 1977 Trans-Am. They were *very* similar cars with two major exterior design differences:
1) the nose, hard to tell with the profile shot you've got here but you can tell if look hard enough.
2) the big give away - the rims. The original bandit had 'snowflake' rims.

The one you've pictured is from the second movie which is actually my personal fav T-A.

Anyway, great list and totally agree with #1 pick. You can't see that car and not think of Doc Brown.

Disgraceful list is disgraceful. Let me point out the flaws:

49: Lebowski deserves better. Much better.
46: Meh, could've chosen better.
41: Are you kidding me? That car should be like to 20 minumum. The bastard sibling in the 2000 remake needs to be here. Disgraceful.
33: No. Doesn't even deserve an Honorable Mention. Screw you Bay for ruining such an iconic character.
31: Disqualified because no streetable car exists. Where's my 700 BHP RWD Toyota Camry huh? I wanna be like Dale Jr.!!!
30: For a site like this, i'm surprised no mention has been made that the Charger is actually a graft of TWO different era Chargers.
26: The world has never seen a more badass Falcon. Top 10 easily. I mean people DIED making that movie. That's good for at least 10 places up.
25: ... The same people who made this list must have made the sci-fi weapons list and put the lightsaber at the bottom of the list. Easily one of the most iconic cars in film ever. And it's at #25?
15: Shunt it to #41 and put the original here. CGI vs. Metal on Metal contact? Opt for the latter. Eleanor II fails.
8: ROOTS. Startsky and *************** Hutch made the Torino. Not a hack comedian and emo-wannabe hero made the Torino.
4: So how much did they pay you to include the car at this spot? Conflict of Interest Alert!!
3: See comment for #8. ROOTS **********, ROOTS.
2: Totally top 5 material. At least they didn't give credit to the Lindsey Failhan remake travesty.
1: Total agreement. This car would not be where it is today without being in these Movies. John DeLorean owes these people a life-debt. Oh wait...

Great list. Some of the honorables maybe ought to have been on the list, and there are still some missing:

The car and the big rig from "Duel"
The flying police cars from "Blade Runner"
The RV from "Stripes"
The RV from "Damnation Alley"
Gold Bentley from "The Apple" (and also every other car from that film, but only for their awfulness)
The Bus from "The Big Bus"

There are likely more, perhaps found here:

http://www.imcdb.org/

Internet Movie *Car* Database (sweet).

But my main reason to post is to correct the statement about Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

While true that nobody actually says the car was an old race car, the title sequence clearly depicts the history of the old gem that becomes Chitty.

In the drawings and other footage, we see Chitty's former life as a race car, and, if memory serves, even how the car got wrecked. I'm a big fan of title sequences that do more than display the names of the actors, and I'm surprised the author of this article missed that.

The car I'm talking about - the car of all cars - is of course:

Il Tempo Gigante !!!
Constructed by bikerepairman Reodor Felgen, and driven in the spectacular race which also gave name to the movie; Flåklypa Grand Prix.

They even made a full scale working and driving model of it!!!

Not just did you forget in the preliminary list, you didn't even mention it in the "sweep-up"!!!

I think you should have made the list Hollywood Automobiles or something like that which would include both movie and TV cars. That said, I feel Bandit's Trans Am totally got disrespected. There are a few cars in Hollywood that made the movie or show instead of the other way around. I don't see how anything could top the General Lee and Bandit #1 in that regard.
