... a competent, straightforward superhero movie ...
Sure, some of the movements of the CGI Spidey look a bit unnatural, but having seen the cartoon, I'm kinda used this kind of exaggerated, gravity-defying arial sequences. The swinging sequences are all very well done; they're fast, unpredictable, scary, and intense. I really felt like I was swinging through all those skyscrapers and dodging the traffic lights and whatever was in Spider-Man's path. The fight sequences involving Spider-Man are also very close to ones in the cartoon. And I love the poses!
The story is pretty straightforward. It goes through how Peter Parker discovers his powers, how he learns how to use them, and why he chose to be a superhero. The acting, overall, is pretty good; at least I didn't see any bad acting. Tobey Maguire plays a nerd well. Kirsten Dunst seems a bit slutty. She just goes through four relationships during the course of the movie (Spider-Man and Peter Parker counts as two).
If the film had a sequence where Spider-Man was being chased through the streets of New York by helicopters firing missiles at him, I would give the movie an extra star. As is, it gets 3 stars (out of 4).
Overall, it's a competent, straightforward superhero movie - good, but not great. I though X-Men had more emotional impact, and Unbreakable more innovative (in the way the story was told).
