Weekly Ketchup: Disney buys Marvel, WB announces Lobo & Deadman
This Week's Ketchup features an unusual number of "threequels," with plans being announced for the third entries to the Bad Boys, Big Momma's House and Halloween franchises. Disney's acquisition of Marvel is also big news, and is accompanied by news about other comic book movies like Lobo, Deadman and Fantastic Four.

The big news this week that was pretty hard to miss was Disney's announced plans to buy Marvel for $4 billion, giving them access to the 5,000+ characters created and owned by the comic book company. This gives Disney access to hundreds of characters that appeal to boys (Disney already has plenty of properties that appeal to girls) in areas that include TV shows, video games, theme parks and of course, movies. It is the movie business, however, that is particularly complicated.

Weekly Ketchup: Spider-Man 5 & 6 Planned
Although remakes have been a common trend in the Weekly Ketchup for quite a while, few weeks have ever been as dominated by them as this one, with remakes taking up 6 of the 11 stories. That is surely an all time (and dubious) record. And then there's a few sequels as well (White Chicks 2, Spider-Man 5 & 6). Hooray for originality, Hollywood.

Frank Miller's Spirit Gets Its Star
Since being confirmed as the writer and director for 2009's live-action adaptation of the classic Will Eisner comic The Spirit, Frank Miller has resisted naming the actor who will be strapping on the domino mask, fedora, and gloves for the title role. Sam Raimi is a bona fide mogul now with his Ghost House Pictures studio producing horror movies while he's off making "Spider-Man" movies. Box office records were shattered by Johnny Depp and his companions this weekend as the much-anticipated adventure sequel Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest exploded into theaters with the biggest opening weekend in Hollywood history. IGN Filmforce carries some news from the AP, and it seems that the "Spider-Man 3" production is taking a quick side-journey to Cleveland, Ohio. Seems it's a lot cheaper to film there and, through the use of special effects, the city can be digitally altered to better replicate the NTC skyline. (Hey, at least they're not shooting in Vancouver.)

"Sith" Smashes Box Office Records All Over the Place
Needless to say, "Star Wars Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith" was the number one movie at the box office this weekend ... and it absolutely demolished a few records in the process. "Sith" grossed just over $158 million in its first four days of release as it debuted on over 9,000 screens.

Sony to Spin SIX Spidey Flicks?
Sci-Fi Wire had a chat with the deservedly admired filmmaker Sam Raimi (director of the "Evil Dead" and "Spider-Man" series), and he divulged an interesting little tidbit regarding the future of Sony's web-slinging franchise: "I've heard Amy Pascal (chairman of Sony's motion picture group) say she wants to make six Spider-Man pictures ... and if she says there'll be six, there'll be six."

Two More Actors Try to Crack the "Da Vinci Code"
Variety brings news of two new additions to Ron Howard's upcoming "The Da Vinci Code." Already on board were Tom Hanks, Jean Reno, and Audrey Tautou, but those crafty casting directors were just getting started. Seems that both Sir Ian McKellen ("X-Men") and Alfred Molina ("Spider-Man 2") have recently signed on for a pair of supporting roles.

Thomas Haden Church to get Villainous for "Spider-Man 3"?
A press release plopped out of my inbox this morning, and here's the really short version: recent Oscar nominee Thomas Haden Church ("Sideways," "George of the Jungle") has been cast as the new villain for "Spider-Man 3," although the producers are apparently keeping tight wraps on who that villain will actually be.

Larry David in "Spidey 3"?
According to an Ain't It Cool News scooper, Larry David has been approached to appear in the next "Spider-Man" movie. David supposedly slipped this tidbit while promoting the "Curb Your Enthusiasm" DVD release on a BBC radio show called Front Row, but he didn't elaborate on the matter. The third movie is currently in the writing stages and is shooting for a 2007 release.
