Hottie Howard to Play Spidey's Stacy
by Scott Weinberg | January 19, 2006
Discuss Article
The Hollywood Reporter brings us some all-new "Spider-Man 3" news; seems that Ms. Bryce Dallas Howard, best known for her work in "The Village" and for being the daughter of the "Arrested Development" narrator, has been cast to play Gwen Stacy, the new girlfriend of everyone's favorite webhead.

"Bryce Dallas Howard is in negotiations to play Peter Parker's love interest Gwen Stacy in Columbia Pictures' "Spider-Man 3." Sam Raimi is directing the movie, which is scheduled to roll this month.

Gwen is pivotal in Spider-Man lore as Peter's high school crush, his first girlfriend and his first love. She ended up being kidnapped by the Green Goblin and died during a bridgetop battle in "Amazing Spider-Man" issue 121.

In "Spider-Man," Columbia put Mary Jane Watson, a later love interest of Peter's who was a model, in the Gwen role, casting Kirsten Dunst as the high school crush. The movie featured the famous battle on the bridge with the Green Goblin, though a Hollywood ending was added, and the character survived.

Columbia is keeping a tight lid on the third movie's story line, though it is known that Gwen is the third part of a love triangle and that the character does survive."

awesome....I like Bryce..she's hot! But if she supposed to get killed by the green goblin - looks like she missed her chance. I guess the Hobgoblin will be doing the killing...

I think Bryce Dallas Howard is a good and promising upcoming actress who was wisely cast in this part. Bryce will most definitely embarass the hot but not so good of an actress, Kiristen Dunst, who in my opinion is one of the rare weak spots in the Spiderman films. This is kinda of an odd plot choice though as the movies are taking Peter's love interests totally oppisite of the comics, but I bet the movie will still be great. Still, you have to wonder if killing off Gwen Stacy in the first movie would be more of a dramatic effect.

I am in the unfortunate position of finding Dunst neither talented or attractive, otherwise I like the series so far. I'm hoping she gets killed off, but I know thats asking for too much.

I like it but I think Black Cat would be awesome, felicia? Really didn't enjoy kersten dunst, as a female lead she was suppose to bolster the Hero and I don't think she did, she was extremely stuck up and superficial, (stereotypical qualities men don't like in a girl) I know thats how it was written in the comics but I agree that Peter needs to move on, hes a man now and should be supported as so.

I didn't like the Spider-man movies and had sworn off of the franchise. But if they kill off Kirsten Dunst? I will love Spider-man 3 as much as people love the last movie despite its shortcomings.

both spidey movies were grossly overrated.

they were entertaining at best.

Kirsten Dunst wouldn't have been my choice for Mary Jane. All these super-hero movies get the leading ladies all wrong.

Elixir, you say that the spidey movies were entertaining at best. What's wrong with being entertained? Unless I've missed something in life, I thought that was what movies are supposed to do.

agreed.
it's as harmless as the superman franchise.
dunst is acceptable in the role. the writing of her character (the creative interpretation of the established lore) makes her look awkward. actress and model? seriously?! i like the blue collar upbringing and the eventual success for both peter and MJ, but her success is forced and her character is lost between the two worlds.

if Howard (who i liked since the Village) is Gwen....then what happens to Mary Jane?...she and Peter got together and she knows his secret..plus, i love Kirsten as Mary Jane. she really won me over in Spider-Man 2

I think Spiderman 3 will see Sam Raimi cutting his own niche in the Spiderman story. Things will start to depart from the comics and the story will be what Sam wants it to be. Let's be honest though, we all knew this day was coming from the moment it was Mary Jane on the bridge in the first movie and not Gwen Stacy. It'll be different than we know, but hopefully good. Unortunately, I too find Kirsten Dunst neither attractive or fit for the role. I think if one was going for cute, Rachel McAdams would have been a great choice.

I agree w/ Elixir.... they were entertaining (nothing wrong with that), but nothing in particular made them as spectacular as the critics seem to think.

Umm, no it would still be the Green Goblin who would kill her, aka Green Goblin II, Harry Osborn, not the Hobgoblin who was someone completely outside of the Osborn family line. The Green Goblins, except for Phil Urich and a few dopplegangers, are all members of the Osborn family.
As for Gwen Stacy... Just a bad choice this late in the movies. Should have been in the first one, unless they plan on keeping her alive as a friend.

Dreday, what are you responding to? When I go to a movie, I want to be entertained, not preached at. Plain and simple as that. The Spiderman movies do what they're supposed to do and if you expect more, then you 'really' need to get out of the cinema.

Yeah, I never really liked Dusnt...She's not a very good actor, in my opinion. As for being attractive, I'm a girl (OMG) so I'll keep silent on that.

Crossin' my fingers that MJ gets killed off!...
