Marvel Entertainment Announces Its "Big Ten" Lineup
by Scott Weinberg | September 07, 2005
Discuss Article
Variety reports that Marvel Enterprises will now be known as Marvel Entertainment, and that they have ten potential movies lined up to produce, and for Paramount to distribute. Curious to see which characters Marvel didn't lease to the other studios? Well, of course "Captain America" is one of 'em!

"Though many of its best characters, from Spider-Man to X-Men to Iron Man, are set up for adaptations at studios, Marvel has identified 10 characters and groups it will develop as potential feature franchises to produce itself:

* patriotic national defender Captain America

* superhero team the Avengers

* super-spy Nick Fury

* African-American adventurer Black Panther

* Ant-Man, who can shrink to insect size and communicate with ants

* teenage embodiments of darkness and light Cloak and Dagger

* mysterious wizard Dr. Strange

* expert archer Hawkeye

* Power Pack, a young group of sibling superheroes

* martial arts expert Shang-Chi

"We are going to commission a lot of scripts and start the race to see which move quickest through development," Marvel prez Avi Arad explained. "We are not significantly veering from what we have been doing with studios, but we now have the luxury of greenlight rights and better financial benefits.""

Marvel is hoping to have their first feature ready by the summer of 2008.

So how bad are they going to make these movies? I highly doubt that these are going to be blockbusters, except maybe captain America. I just don't think many people know cloak and dagger, power pack and shan chi or even care if there is a movie made about them; I know I don't.

If they make a movie about Captain America, they shouldn't release the movie over seas.

Eh, I doubt they're expecting Spider-man like money from the ones you mention. I think for those lesser known characters, they'll market them a little less like comic book movies and more like genre movies. Constantine did fairly well over-all without the general public really knowing the core character as a super-hero. They probably believe the overall story to make a movie, not neccassarily recongnizability. Or they could just be shilling for every dollar they can. Always a possibility. I'm just looking forward to maybe seeing some super-hero interaction in between films, as there are several movies on the individual Avengers rumored to be in the works, and why bother doing it if you can't bring Cap or Iron Man in from another movie? And who's Nick Fury without some super-hero balls to bust? And who's Ant-man......welll, forget him, an Ant-man movie is a terrible idea.

Where's Thor?
Their going to do a Hawyeye movie, Captain America, Ant-Man and the Avengers? The first three make the fourth unnecessary. If Avengers is the way to introduce Thor, I rather he had his own movie!

I guess these mark the end of the comic to movie adaptation craze.

They seem to be REALLY clutching for straws now. Nick Fury? Hawkeye?!

The only way Nick Fury would be good is if they use the Ultimate version and cast Samuel L. Jackson as him. Nick Fury is so much better black.

Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury is indeed perfect... If you are not familiar with Captain America, don't knock it until you've done your homework. This isn't about an American flag carrying do-gooder. Its about a government created super-soldierwho lived in the 1940's fighting WWII. Only to be thrown into todays society, culture, and warfare. Alot of room to write a good script here..

They made Elektra, why not Ant Man?
Who the hell was Elektra? That's a great example of why these movies will suck like a toothless weasel. The DareDevil movie was crap, and Elektra was pathetic. AntMan can not possibly be worse.

here is what i get when i here these ideas.

* patriotic national defender Captain America
A good character, probably should pop out a movie with him...why not.

* superhero team the Avengers
ehh, maybe.

* super-spy Nick Fury
who? if you want to. really, i probably won't see it.

* African-American adventurer Black Panther
ehh..

* Ant-Man, who can shrink to insect size and communicate with ants
please don't.

* teenage embodiments of darkness and light Cloak and Dagger
ehh...maybe.

* mysterious wizard Dr. Strange
YES!

* expert archer Hawkeye
about the same as captain america, go for it, just don't make another elektra

* Power Pack, a young group of sibling superheroes
ehhh....no.

* martial arts expert Shang-Chi
never heard of this one, probably no.

So in the end all I can say is.

Dr Strange. Yes!

Captain America and Hawkeye, YesNO maybeso. why not?

Avengers i rather say no...then yes.

the rest
NO!

Doc Strange and Cloak & Dagger
I'd love to see those. The rest I'm not that interested to see. Avengers would be good but I don't think anyone could pull it off with out screwing it up. Shang-Chi, I actually have many of those...perfect Jackie Chan vehicle but it will look like every other martial arts film done lately. They should have done this one ten years ago.

I heard they wanted to do this superhero-movie a couple years ago, and they were thinking of getting wesley snipes for it.
what happend to projects like Flash or Thor??
american comics are not that big in europe, so I didn't know Blade nor Constantine before the movies came out. But how interesting can a movie about a guy who can turn into an ant be??? I hope it's a poisonous ant at least!

Talking points
-Now that Marvel's starting to finally get their act together and develope their intellectual property themselves, we should finally get to see a coherent Marvel universe being formed within these films. We should have hero crossovers and references not allowed previously due to different rights holders.

-"Honey, I Shrunk The Kids" my ass! Ant Man (alias Henry "Hank" Pym, A.K.A. Giant Man, Goliath, & Yellowjacket) is a founding member of the Avengers and one of the oldest original Marvel superheroes, having first appeared in Tales To Astonish #27 back in 1962. Have some ****ing respect for the King, y'all.

-It makes perfect sense to establish core individuals like Cap, Iron Man, and Ant Man in their own films before making an Avengers movie and uniting them. If the individual films are successful, Avengers should be HOT!

-Anyone who knows even a little about the character knows that Captain America isn't some glorified patriotic flag waver. Kirby and Simon made the character to inspire ideals, integrity, and bravery, not be a sleazy propaganda tool. Again, a little respect for Jack (and Joe) is appropriate.

-Don't knock the character because of the movie. Frank Miller's Elektra: Assassin" is one of the all-time greatest comic series in the history of the medium. They would have been much better off using that story as at least a template for the film.

-Lastly, I don't really care whether the films come out good or bad, as long as they stay true and respectful to the character/s and the visions of their creators. That's really all I could ask for. But, for the love of God, please don't let Bendis have anything to do with these films!
