Sam Raimi Discusses "Spider-Man 4" Villains
by Scott Weinberg | June 27, 2007
Discuss Article
A whole bunch of new bad guys might be on their way ... but still no love for The Lizard?

It's still completely up in the air: Sam Raimi may or may not be returning to direct "Spider-Man 4" (I'm betting he won't), but either way he'll be staying attached to the series as a producer. So when MTV Movies got to chat with the mega-successful moviemaker, the conversation got around to what villains MIGHT arise in the third sequel.

Apparently Mr. Raimi is leaning towards Electro and The Vulture, although he does express some affection for the Dr. Connors character. Played by Dylan Baker, the one-armed professor is supposed to become The Lizard at some point ... but we're still waiting.

One very juicy possibility would be the arrival of The Sinister Six: A super-villain squad that includes Electro, Sandman, Dr. Octopus, The Vulture, Mysterio, and Kraven the Hunter. But surely that'd be too many villains for one movie ... but it'd probably be pretty fun.

And as a longtime fan of Rhino, I'm pretty disappointed that he hasn't been mentioned yet.

The sinister six would be pretty cool, but that includes some villains that Spider-Man reconciled with at the end of his movies. The lizard should make an appearance sooner or later.

Series is dead to me. Spiderman 3 was God awful. Who would of thought that a new chapter of a very successful series such as Spiderman 3 would be overtaken by a Michael Bay film as best film of the summer? Not I.

I thought Spider-man 3 was better than the first one. The Sinister Six would be cool but concentrating on one or two villains would be more realistic. The Lizard and The Vulture have my votes. I am looking forward to the 4th film regardless.

I agree with Moose. Kill the friggin' series already. GOD-AWFUL. Not only was it the worst movie of the summer for me, it is, so far, one of the worst comic book movies EVER and one of the worst of the year.

I'm not kidding. Electro and Vulture now?!? YAWN...

Marvel's just phoning it in now. They've been phoning it in since the second X-men movie. Almost everything they've made outside of SM and the X-Men movies has been complete crap.

"you know merlin is going to come on the site and stop whining for people to stop bitching about sp 3."
So I'm going to 'stop whining for people to stop bitching'.....????
Actually, your comment made me laugh, and not because of your word use faux pas, but because I WAS going to post exactly that. It has become very apparent to me that spending free time on a website only to be critical of other people's work is, well, pathetic. So I'm going to try and be more positive. However, I will continue to have my sense of humor when it comes to people like Uwe Boll. But yes, when I see that we as a group are being overly critical of something just because we're nerdy about it, I'll point that out.
That said, I think the best bet for Spidey 3 would be Lizard, and bringing back Venom to do him right.

Agreed. And he seemed to work things out with Sandman at the end of Spider-Man 3, so it'd be a little weird.

Spider Man 3 didn't break the mold when it comes to the curse of the 3's. Superman 3 Batman Forever, X-Men 3. Seems like Marvel needs to hire director's and let them do their damn job. Such as Singer, and Nolan. Everything just feels rushed to make a quick million. FF42 was awful and so was Spider Man 3. Venom for a whole 15 minutes and then completely disintegrated him. What a waste. FF42 promised big on action and had next to nothing except for maybe Surfer dodging missiles. Big bummer

For god's sake, get rid of him already! No more campy Spiderman movies! Three is (more than) enough.

I'm all for another sequel or twelve, but the character needs a more respectable treatment. The producers should know by now that Raimi isn't capable of that. Sure, the first two movies are good by themselves, but they have nothing to do with Spiderman. Well, not MY Spiderman.

And I said "ONE of the worst", not "THE WORST".

Merlin said:

And spending free time to defend said crappy movie on a website...ISN'T pathetic??? Just wondering. After all, we're the people who buy their product at the movie theaters every Friday. I think us moviegoers have a right to complain as much as you have the right to defend, no?

Spiderman 3 wasn't that bad...
Granted, SM3 could have been better... a LOT better, but it certainly wasn't "teh worst movie of teh summer". I'd give that dutiful honor to "Are we Done yet?" "Next" or "Hostel, part II". The allegations of Spiderman 3 being the worst thing since George Bush's election is a typical example of hyperbole. Hyperbole says, "You either have to really like it, or hate it with every inch of your soul." That's not true. In fact, a lot of people who say SM3 was godawful probably haven't even seen it.

My idea for the villain
As for the whole "new villain" thing, I think that the Ultimate version of Carnage (not Cletus Casady) would work. In Ultimate Spider Man, Carnage is a creature with Peter Parker's DNA, and Peter Parker's memories. It wants to be human, but it knows it isn't and never will be. To top that off, he must feed on other people's nutrients to maintatin structural integrity without a host(being a symbiote and all). A villain like this would be right up Sam Raimi's alley, since he is a being to be both pitied and feared, which is an element Raimi is quite good at.

how can a series be dead to you, because of one movie. who cares what you thought of spider-man 3, but transformers isn't even out yet and you are proclaiming it the king of the summer. you are a fucking moron. the first two spider-man movies were great and for all we know the fourth can be great, regardless of your opinion of this highly underrated third movie. spider-man 3 was no batman & robin for christsakes and that was followed by batman begins. so stfu you ignorant cocksucker.

I was waiting for someone to say that. I'm not defending the movie as much as I am commenting on the excessive criticism the movie takes. The vitriol directed at it is uncalled for. You have your right to dislike it of course, I'm not saying you can't do that. But anyone being honest with themselves can in no way put this movie on par with FF, Daredevil, Elektra, Catwoman, Batman & Robin, or anything Uwe Boll does. I will admit the crappy parts of Spidey 3, and there were more than a couple. I was as disapointed as the next fan. I was expecting a totally different tone for the movie, and I didn't get it. Bummer, yes. It's just way too much hate directed at Raimi and his movie, thats all. Plain and simple. I'd love to see a new director with new talent take it in a new direction. But be careful what you wish for, we might end up with someone worse.

Wow
Some of these idiots are striking down SM3 for stupid reasons. SM3 was the best movie, but we cant determine this off another movie that hasnt come out yet. Another thing, how can you idiots compare SM3 to Batman and Robin. Wow, wtf.... you must be too ignorant to understand that SM3 was waaaay better and not some crackpot movie.

I wanna see SM4 roll into production soon, but we just have to wait and see the outcome of all this. The villians will be a surprise to us, I wouldn't mind seeing The Lizard and Carnage play out in this coming film, and I would love to see Tobey, Kirsten, and Sam stay in this together. So watch what u motherfuckers are posting and dont be dissin' SM3.

It looked like we were in for a dark more mature spiderman in 3 and what we got was basically a spoof on the character... and the villians give me a break. The cartoon gave the villians more justice than that movie. A half ass attempt gives you a half assed movie. This is coming from a Spiderman fan (comics and movies) Please don't do a Spiderman 4
