Koepp to Write "Spider-Man 4"?
by Jeff Giles | January 22, 2007
Discuss Article
The ink's barely dry on his script for the fourth "Indiana Jones," but screenwriter David Koepp is already in talks to write the fourth installment in Columbia Pictures' "Spider-Man" series.

But don't go thinking Koepp's just a fourth-installment guy -- he wrote the first "Spider-Man," after all, so this is actually sort of a homecoming for him. His screenplay may ultimately prove to be the least of the studio's worries; before starting production, Columbia will have to try and negotiate new deals with stars Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, and James Franco, not to mention director Sam Raimi.

Luckily, there's plenty of time to do all that -- "Spider-Man 4" isn't due for release until 2009 or 2010.

Will Tobey Maguire (left), Kirsten Dunst (right), and Sam Raimi (center) return for fourth installment?

i think sony has realized that the spider-man movies are their bread and butter. unless sam raimi intends for there to be a spider-man 4, i will not support the making of this film.

I thought the cast didn't really want to make another one? But don't get me wrong, I would love to see it.

If Raimi didn't direct. . .
I'd support it depending on who the new director was. Who knows, maybe they'd get Peter Jackson. Unfortunately, it will probably be a new director who will try to imitate the feel of the originals but fail. I also wouldn't like to see anyone but Dunst and Maguire as MJ and Peter Parker. It's just too weird when they change actors.

I really hope Raimi directs the fourth film. He IS the soul of the franchise and obviously is its most important contributer.

I like Toby Maguire in the role. Kirsten not so much; she's not suited for MJ.

I think Rachel McAdams and Jake Gyllenhaal would make an even better team. They'd bring a maturity to the franchise and pull it out of the 'angst' that has characterized it thus far.

Not that I mind the films up to this point(I love 'em) . . . but I'm eager for a change in tone, a sense of progression toward a new stage in the characters' lives. I wouldn't mind if the love story could be resolved so that the films can explore other avenues of dramatic content.

Changing the Sam Raimi or the major actors at this point would just make the movies seem like a cheap sequel and probably kill the series especially after they've already done 3 movies. Maybe if they waited 20 years or so they could pull it off. Right now everyone would just compare it to the first 3, no matter who was in it the fourth one would end up being teh one where they changed actors.

So I guess it's for sure there'll be a Spider-man 4. I knew it was most definitely going to happen. Ok this is pretty cool then.

Brett Ratner
I think Brett Ratner should direct the fourth Spiderman. He did such a great job with XMEN 3. I'm joking.

I hope it isn't Lucas. I doubt that Sony would do something to jeopardize this franchise, so my guess is they hire quality people. Who knows, maybe MJ dies in this one. That'd solve THAT problem (of hiring back Kirsten Dunst). But it can be done. Just has to be a good director.

Maybe they could bring in someone to play The Black Cat, although it might jar the series to change the love interest yet again.

No George Lucas!!!!!
George Lucas would kill this franchise!!!! These movies are charcter driven films which is what makes them the cream of the comic book movie crop, look at George Lucas track record in pulling solid performances even from good actor( has the excellent Ewan McGregor ever been so shitty as in the last Star Wars?) Peter Jackson would be great but would he accept, Guillermo Del Toro already has Hellboy, I have a few maybe off center ideas....how about Doug Liman he has a great visual style (Go!) and did an excellent job shoting action sequences with Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Also Peter Berg he has a great visual style with films such as The Rundown and Friday Night Lights, and if given a larger budget I think he could kick ass! The third is Alex Proyas, I feel he could bring a really interesting tone maybe a darker more intense Spiderman than we have seen before!!!

I think this would give people a wierd been there-done that feel, too many shades of "Batman Returns", but it would be a cool story idea. Alex Proyas, now THERE's an interesting director choice! I would be down for that...

Bringing Koepp back to write the script is a good start. Hopefully they bring back everyone, but if not I'll still look foreward to it, just not as much.

tarantino. just kidding. i always think to myself what would happen to a movie franchise (superman? harry potter? james bond?) if tarantino directed the next installment. its a fun game to play.

All I think is that Sam Raimi should do a smaller film between Spidey 3 and 4 just to clear his head of the (ahem) cobwebs. That way, the stars can go do other projects, Koepp can write the screenplay and everyone will feel fresh and happy to participate once again. I also like the fact that the series has the same feel as the Harry Potter films, that feeling of catching up with old friends after a couple of years to see how they're going. They could do this sort of thing indefinitely, and why not? That's what comic book series' do.
