"Spidey 3" Breaks Records Overseas; Plans Biggest NA Opening Ever

The movie doesn't even open in North America until Friday, but that hasn't stopped "Spider-Man 3" from breaking a few records overseas. Plus it'll be opening in a record number of N.A. theaters, too.

All over Asia, Spidey broke some serious records: Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore... Just about every country earned the flick a new opening day record. (Don't these people work on Tuesdays?)

The second Spidey sequel also opened in France, Germany and Italy on Tuesday; Australia, Russia and China get it on Thursday; folks in Canada, India, the UK and the US must wait till Friday. Well, midnight Thursday, anyway.

This comes after eight different premieres around the globe, plus the movie played on 14 (!) screens at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City. And just think: In only a few months "Spider-Man 3" will be just another movie on the Best Buy DVD shelves.

I don't think you should be allowed on Rotten Tomatoes if you don't go see this movie.

this site doesn't seem to be about movies sometimes. it seems to be about comic books 24/7. i grew up on comic books, but haven't read one in years. i'm sure there are a lot of readers who are with me on this.

The reviews for the film don't surprise me. The filmmakers wanted to continue the ever-progressing love story between Peter and MJ . . . but they couldn't do that while maintaining the integrity(growing maturity) of the characters. So they regressed.

Spider-Man and Spidey 2 took care of the pre-marriage relationship, and Raimi should have gone with a more mature approach for the third film. Hopefully they'll do this in the fourth. I'd love to see Kraven the Hunter and the Lizard in a cat-and-mouse tangle . . . especially since Peter would have an emotional investment in both stopping, and also saving, the Lizard(while also attending to the Conners family). And of course the cool part about a Kraven story is having Kraven don the Spidey outfit, and take the superhero's place while Mary Jane frets over where her husband has vanished to.

I haven't seen the movie so I can't say if the story has regressed at all, but I'm not suprised at the reviews either. It's the third movie. The other two had tomatoemeters above 90%. That's awesome. How do you keep up with that? Critics are fickle, that's what they do. Fair or not, this movie can't just be judged as a stand alone movie but also in the light of the earlier ones. Of course, some of the stuff I hear critics saying is awfully nitpicky.

Hi. I'm from Malaysia. For the statement "(Don't these people work on Tuesdays?)", haha.... NO, it's Labor Day on Tuesday, and Wesak Day on Wednesday, so we have 2 public holidays in this week. And YES, almost all the movie buffs (including me) from the town are flocking to the cinemas to catch this sequel on the opening day. Regardless of the reviews, it seems like the longest queue i ever saw in years, the tickets are sold out for the whole week 1 May - 8 May.

I don't plan to write any spoilers here, all I can say is I do enjoy the movie! :)
Forget the critics. To you all, "Go get them Tiger!"

True. At time of posting, there's about 55 Reviews and the two other Spiderman films ended up with 200+. So yeah, I bet this 74% Tomatometer will get amped up by Friday.

I think the same. It's defenitley going to get better reviews than it is now (not that the reviews it's recieving are poor). There are going to be critics that liked it better, didn't like it as much, and feel the same. I think that, based on what I've seen, a lot more critics are going to like it as much as the other two, which is basically good news for its tomatometer.

But even if it got a 0% I'd see it the day it came out and many times after.

**sigh** I have a feeling that when all is said and done it may end up with a rotten rating or very close to it. There's enough reviews to give it a base-line and I doubt it'll get back to 80% at the best case scenario. And at least the decent rotten reviews seem to have the common thread of too much action and not enough "character".

I believe it'll still be a good movie, I was hoping for a little bit better tomatometer though :)
