Topher Grace Makes Up Venom's Best Lines
by Fred Topel | May 04, 2007
Discuss Article
Villains are usually the coolest part of any action movie. They usually have outlandish character traits and the best lines. "Spider-Man 3" finally gives us Venom, and actor Topher Grace made sure that he was the funniest as well as the most formidable villain.

"The script wasn't done when I signed on, so there was kind of like places open for ideas," said Grace. "A lot of it was me talking to Sam [Raimi]. I had a couple Sam ixnayed which he was probably right to do so. But yeah, 'My spider sense is tingling’ was one of them [that made it]."

In context, when Venom throws Spideys own trademark back at him, it's impeccable. But wait, what were the juicy lines that Raimi vetoed? "He let me do it and then we watched on playback and realized that’s probably too much. It’s when I landed on the car and Mary Jane’s in the car. Originally I go, ‘Ooo, looks like I traded up from vanilla to strawberry.’"

"Spider-Man 3" is out today and currently has a 63 percent score on the Tomatometer.

So was the line from X-men 2,

"...continue smoking that in here and you'll spend the rest of your days under the belief the you're a six-year-old girl."

It's all about context and delivery. . . . . . okay, I'm sorry, that strawberry line was pretty retarded.

haha, now if they could have just done something with, "I protected you in high school, but now I'm gunna kick your little ass." Ahhhh, a little too much cheese for me.

The majority of the Spiderman 3 script was complete crap. I don't think that strawberry line could've made it worse.

I do think people are being a LITTLE bit harsh on Spiderman 3. Was it as bad as Daredevil? Elektra? Fantastic Four? Superman Returns? I don't think so, I think it was better than all those.

Agree with the first 3, but Superman Returns was a good movie.

Superman Returns was one of the worst movies I saw last year. Everything in that film was too far fetched. The "love" story was terribly done. Not once did I feel sorry for either character, or wish they would get together. There was very little chemistry...or thought put into that part of the story. Also, WORST EVIL PLOT EVER, has to go to the stupid Kryptonite Continent.

Anyway, Spiderman 3 wasn't that bad. Each film had flaws, some were major, and some minor. The whole series had plenty of cheese factor. Green Goblin had the stupid costume, the bad lines, and the over acting. Spiderman 2 had the horrible slow 30 minutes that was Peter losing his powers, then having to talk to Aunt Mae. WORST SCENE EVER! The whole scene was pointless, as it restated every that she said in the first film, and came out as HEAVY FILLER. Now, Spiderman 3 has the EMO PARKER, which to its favor, was funny. Now, Venom sort of irritated me, but that has nothing to do with Topher, but in the fact that the design for it pissed me off. The lack of a good chin really bothered me.

Grace and Church were the best parts of S3. Too bad they were in it for barely 20 minutes.

Flawed? Yes...but this flick isn't nearly as bad as some folks make it out to be. Hell, even I liked it.

i'm more annoyed that Venom never refers to himself in the plural. not once does he ever call himself "we" in the movie. what i would have given if he could have just said "Eddie Brock is no more, we are now VENOM!"

Venom never should of made it into the movie. The Not Never.

My re-write -

The Symbiote is introduced to Peter via a rock brought to earth being studied by Dr Conner.

After Peter fought off the Symbiote it should of appeared dead and been discarded leading Peter to have t deal with whatever is coming next alone.

The Sandman's daughter should of died while he was wet causing Marko to freak-out when he got his shit together and come after Spidey harder.

No Butler

Sandman makes his return halfway through Harry and Peter's climatic battle. Screws them both up. Peter saves Harry from Sandman. Harry lightens on Peter. They team up and take him out for good.

Peter and Harry finally make up. Harry dies from his wounds.

They bury him.

MJ and Peter make up.

Eddie Brock goes into the church and melts down. A tiny piece of the symbiote suit energizes and latches on to Brock's leg.

Brock's prayers change from "I hate him" to "We hate him"

Fade to Black.
