Critics Consensus: Spiderwick Weaves Gold, Jumper Goes Over the Shark, Say Yes to Maybe
Also: Back away from Step Up.
by Tim Ryan and Alex Vo | February 13, 2008
Discuss Article
This week at the movies, we've got supernatural dwellers (The Spiderwick Chronicles, starring Freddie Highmore and Mary-Louise Parker), teleporters (Jumper, starring Hayden Christensen and Samuel L. Jackson), a dance dance revolution (Step Up 2 the Streets, starring Briana Evigan), and uncertain love (Definitely, Maybe, starring Ryan Reynolds and Rachel Weisz). What do the critics have to say?

For smart family fare, critics say you could do a lot worse than The Spiderwick Chronicles. Condensing five books by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black, Spiderwick stars Freddie Highmore as a kid who's upset about relocating from New York City to an old Gothic mansion with his mom and siblings. A series of mischevious pranks are blamed on the boy, but it soon becomes apparent the house is loaded with supernatural guests, some kind, some malicious. The pundits say Spiderwick may be a cut below the Harry Potters and Narnias of the world, but it still delivers a solid fantasy/adventure, maintaining a sense of wonderment while addressing the growing pains inherent in the lives of young people. At 76 percent on the Tomatometer, Spiderwick is truly one for the whole family.

"I didn't know there were nude beaches in New England."

Even science fiction films must play by a certain set of rules. Unfortunately, the critics say Jumper is all over the map. Based upon Steven Gould's novel, Jumper stars Hayden Christensen as a young man who finds he can teleport through space and time before discovering that another "jumper" (Jamie Bell) is hot on his trail. Pundits say the film has slick visuals, but betrays its own internal logic and features bland characters and weak dialogue. At 14 percent on the Tomatometer, Jumper isn't making the critics jump for joy. It's also the worst-reviewed film of director Doug Liman's career.

Just another service provided by your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man!

Despite its shopworn plot, Step Up was a surprise hit. So what do they do for an encore? In the case of Step Up 2 the Streets, pretty much the same thing, say critics. As with the previous installment, 2 combines culture-clash drama with loads of dance moves. The pundits say Step Up has some nice dance sequences and a decent amount of energy, but watch out for the scenes where people are talking to each other, because the characters are blander than the foxtrot. At 29 percent on the Tomatometer, word on the Street is this isn't all that hot. (Check out our feature on notable dance movies here.)

"Anybody got a cure for the rickets?"

With Definitely, Maybe, Ryan Reynolds seems to have finally ditched the frat boy image that's dogged him since his 2 Guys, A Girl and a Pizza Place days. He stars as Will Hayes, a soon-to-be divorcee regaling his daughter (Abigail Breslin) with the story of three women, one of which would eventually become his wife. Critics say the movie is anchored by the affable chemistry between Reynolds and Breslin, and while it's typically cute and sappy, writer-director Adam Brooks gives the movie just enough wit and light cynicism to keep it from being cloying. At 69 percent, couples will Definitely want to catch Maybe. (Catch our interview with Reynolds here.)

Also opening this week in limited release.

  • The Year My Parents Went on Vacation, a coming-of-age drama from Brazil, is at 75 percent on the Tomatometer.
  • Ezra, a drama set amongst the rebels occupying Sierra Leone, is at 69 percent.
  • George A. Romero's Diary of the Dead, a POV film from the king of zombies, is at 66 percent.

I cant lie, I'm gonna go see JUMPER. I like Doug Liman, and sometimes I cant help myself from not see a SCI-FI flick no matter how mediocre it is. I'll rent the spider thing, and I'll rent DIARY OF THE DEAD.

Surprising Tomatometers. I was expecting Definitely, Maybe and The Spiderwick Chronicles to bomb magnificently. I guess I could have seen The Spiderwick Chronicles succeeding, but Definitely, Maybe's critical reception blows my mind. It looks a lot like the sort of romantic comedy that comes out at least six times a month and is trashed equally hard, if not harder each time, with each new incarnation. Yet it is apparently good. Not decent, not borderline, but good. Wow.

Jumper was doomed to fail, though, and we all knew it. Still, I'll Netflix it someday because I like the premise...and that's about it.

Also, I don't like Freddie Highmore. Or The Spiderwick Chronicles books. And yet I'm still going to Netflix the movie at some point. Oh well, if the critics say it's good, it probably is (although the commercials definitely suggest otherwise).

honestly, it shocked me. not that its not fresh, but how low the

tomater meter is at, currently at 22%. still, at the moment that step up

sequel is getting better reviews and frankly i have no idea why anybody

would think that film is fresh. although, maybe those spider chronicles is

worth a ten spot...

With the Indiana Jones trailer attached to Spiderwick, and Spiderwick getting good reviews, it's looking like Spiderwick might be worth a go.

i had my doubts about jumper cause i STRONGLY DISLIKE (hate is a strong word..... though accurate!) hayden christensen. but i LOVE doug liman. so i'm totally seeing jumper cause even if the acting and script suck (wow... did i just say if?).... at least it will be well put together.

Jumper looks decent but i can't get away from ol' boy being a sh3tty Anakin. he was so bad in the star wars movies(along with portman) i can't NOT see him as that whiney b3tch. its a shame too because Jumper looks decent. a nice little thriller/action and you can almost never go wrong with Sam Jackson in there...although uhm, they were both in the new Star Wars movies so that doesn't draw me in either. rental...

a POV zombie movie eh? listen, Cloverfield was a fluke...don't start the POV craze please. POV belongs in porn...not in horror.

SpiderWick and Diary of the Dead are the two I'm most interested in. How many of the others I see will depend on how bored I get. I'm not at all interested in dance movies. I'll probably end up seeing Jumper just because it's SciFi, but I'm pretty sure that it's going to be bad.

First why do you guys care about some random person giving a review for a movie it's your own opinion see it if you want don't see it if it looks dumb don't have some dumbass critic be the final answer to whether your going to see the movie or not.

Yeah, screw the critics, darkjoke. I might be in the minority here, but I'm one of those dudes that actually liked Hannibal Rising. And we all know it's fate with the critics. Jumper? I'm interested. Weary, yes. But interested still. The books were good. Now the tomatometer, sure, makes me a little hesitant to purchase a ticket. But not much. Think with your own mind is the name of the game. Dug The Nines, The Number 23, Lady in the Water, The Kingdom, Unbreakable. All despite the tomatometers and the opinions of my friends. Whatever.

I've liked Freddie Highmore since I saw "Finding Neverland" and I'll definetly go see "The Spiderwick chronicles". I also agree with the last comments, about the reviews from the critics. Movies can still kick despite low reviews.

Yes, one can like a movie critics hate, but its often a good litmus test. Critics sometimes look at a movie differently than your everyday Joe, but at the same time, given a choice between 2 movies, one Fresh and one extremely Rotten, I will probably choose the Fresh one. Given that I only have so much time on my hands, I think I'll skip "Jumper". I agree that Definitely, Maybe looked fairly average, but given the Fresh rating, I think I will give it a go.

I agree some reviews are dead wrong. I absolutely love the Resident Evil movies and they get panned. Thank god they make enough money to justify more films. But if I'm on the fence than an 11% won't light a fire under my butt to see a movie.
