Frolicking through the New York... The social-climbing and false-faced world of New York theater is the subject of dramatic master Sidney Lumet's second film, following the acclaimed 12 ANGRY MEN. Frolicking through the New York streets like a melodramatic Mary Tyler Moore, Susan Strasberg (daughter of Lee, founder of the Actors Studio) is the young actress recently arrived from the sticks of Vermont, having adopted the telling stage name Eva Lovelace. When her desperate attempt to pinch even the smallest role lands her in the office of big-time producer Louis Hathaway (the icy and charismatic Henry Fonda), Lovelace unwittingly places herself at the center of the tumultuous attentions of both Hathaway and his star playwright, Joe Sheridan (Christopher Plummer in his first role). A drunken recitation of the entire balcony scene from ROMEO AND JULIET at a Broadway party engenders a brief and tragic fling between the starlet and the producer and sets the wheels in motion for heartache and fame.
