The two--who have never met even though they work together--come together when Stanley bumps into Iris on the street right after her purse is stolen. He offers to walk her home, and the two soon learn that they have much more in common than just their place of work; they both have tremendously trying personal lives. However, when Iris learns that Stanley is illiterate, she inadvertently gets him fired from his job, prompting Stanley, who is coming to grips with his handicap for the first time, to ask Iris if she will help him learn to read. In order to convey a sense of what being illiterate is like, director Martin Ritt infuses the film with a tremendous feeling for its locale, a small New England town, emphasizing Stanley's feeling of isolation as he goes about his daily business without being able to read. Of course, DeNiro's amazing performance as Stanley helps too, and, as Iris, Fonda plays wonderfully against him, making the film a great romance as well as a great drama. [More]

While some of the sloppy filmmaking can be forgiven, the film's core message cannot.

Although the construction is somewhat haphazard, the intention is well meaning and DeNiro gives a characteristically sensitive rendering.

McAlpine may be the movie's smartest contributor. He alone seems to realize that this pedantic project will soon be graduating into home-video or classroom use.

Here, in a movie less animated than a barrel of tree sloths, Ritt encourages stale performances and a pace as dull as more tree sloths.

The ending, despite good intentions, is American cinema at its tackiest and most hollow.

The elements are in place but they don't add up to great drama in this well-meant effort to personalize the plight of illiterate people.

There is also a good supporting cast here, and Fonda is effective in her role. But it's DeNiro who shines with a very affecting performance, as well as a natural chemistry with Fonda.

...a harmless little romance that's elevated slightly by the charisma of its two stars...

It's as honest and direct and entertaining as the considerable talents of everyone involved can make it.
