Sappy, sweet and sentimental. A nice little romance with a message about literacy and family values.

another boring movie of two people falling in love while learning how to read and write and nothing ever happens, I just knew it was an update of "Falling in love" but with Jane Fonda, yuck yuck yuck

This is a very good movie

Plot: Stanley (Robert De Niro) is a hardworking man who can't read; Iris (Jane Fonda) is a newly widowed woman who, to pay the bills, takes on a low-paying job at the bakery where Stanley works. The two don...( read more read more... )'t meet until the day Iris's purse is stolen and Stanley finds her distressed on the street. In spite of their differences, they fall in love; Iris helps Stanley overcome his illiteracy, and Stanley teaches Iris how to hope again.

One of De Niro's lower profile performances but it's still a good one. Jane Fonda, on the other hand is a bit annoying. A nice feel good film which would have been much more a much more powerful story if they'd have focused on the background of Stanley, rather than Iris.

Jane Fonda was wonderful, and you can absolutely have the rest of it. (On the other hand, if you like to feel pain, you will love this movie.)

Robert De Niro and Jane Fonda are both good in their respective roles but ultimately, this film is done too much like a made-for-TV drama which does not set any new standards and eventually comes across as unoriginal. Might have been better if Douglas Sirk had directed 35 years earlier with Rock Hudson and Jane Wyman in the leads.

I did see it on TV small screen and loved it. Thought the cast members were extremely convincing.

A simple story told beautifully.

I adore Jane Fonda and Robert DeNiro. This movie is a remarkable story and the two actors bring it to life. At 62 yrs young, and having seen this moving numerous times, it still brings tears to my eyes. It's a classic and a must see.

De Niro just can't do this type of movie. Fonda and De Niro have very little chemistry.
