Those prepared to hate the reboot of STAR TREK--whether they’re diehard fans or those in the anti-sci-fi camp--may be convinced to lower their shields after seeing this fun, action-filled film. Best known for creating mythology-driven series like LOST, J.J. Abrams has imbued his version with the elements that have made his shows such mind-bending entertainment while still keeping the soul of the saga intact. STAR TREK begins with an attack by an impossibly advanced Romulan ship captained by the tattooed, snarling Nero (Eric Bana). Among the survivors is the infant version of James T. Kirk (Chris Pine), who grows up to wreak havoc on the Iowa countryside. When Captain Christopher Pike (Bruce Greenwood) meets an adult Kirk, he encourages him to join Starfleet, giving him the opportunity to meet Spock (Zachary Quinto), Uhura (Zoe Saldana), and the rest of the characters audiences have loved for decades. Abrams has assembled a fine cast who seem to be aware of their predecessors but never resort to impressions. Both Quinto and Pine do a fine job with their portrayals of Kirk and Spock, and Karl Urban couldn’t be better as Leonard McCoy. The supporting players--Simon Pegg (Scotty), John Cho (Sulu), and Anton Yelchin (Chekov)--all capture the essence of what drove their characters, though their screen time is limited. STAR TREK manages the nearly impossible: it pleases hardcore fans with plenty of in-jokes and references (and an appearance by the original Spock, Leonard Nimoy), but it doesn’t alienate newcomers with tons of technobabble. The action and effects rank with any other top-tier summer blockbuster, but there’s plenty of humor to balance the excitement. For anyone who (wrongly) felt he had to hide his trekker tendencies, this undeniably cool version of STAR TREK offers a chance to wear the "geek" label with pride. [More]

Reviews for Star Trek
I must add that the reason I think this new Star Trek works has less to do with Abrams being the director and more to do with a genuinely smart script by Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman.
With great effects, a strong story and equally strong cast, "Star Trek" is a journey worth taking...
This Star Trek essentially turns out to be a war film, with the occasional philosophical timeout to discuss love, friendship, and duty until the next bone-crunching fistfight or multi-weapon rumble with the Romulans.
This is the best Star Trek movie, ever. Better, even, than the classic Start Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.
[Director J.J.] Abrams kicks his film into warp drive and boldly goes where the Star Trek actually has gone before. Only better.
Good mix of special effects, an involving story, a good script, and fine ensemble acting.
With director J.J. Abrams on board, the newest movie in the series is not only action-packed but also filled with surprises.
Yes, the genie is back out of the bottle. Well acted, expertly edited, and brilliantly watchable even if not perfect. And above all, it doesn't suck.
The unpredictability of this alternate reality gives future screenwriters a free hand to go where no one has gone before.
a Luddite picture wary of the future and reliant on something so simple as being human to be the salvation of the human race.
It's disheartening that Deforest Kelly, James Doohan, and series creator Gene Roddenberry won't be able to see their legacy "beam" back to life and continue at warp speed.
A gigantic bore for more than half its running time, but it eventually grows surprisingly involving, thanks mostly to its great cast.
J.J. Abrams muscles aside Trek's ponderous aspects with a rip-roaring storyline and enough action to qualify as a galactic James Bond movie
Trek fan or not, only a person who hates action movies entirely could hate Star Trek.
Embora concebido com a preocupação de permitir que os "não-iniciados" possam acompanhar a história, o roteiro é inteligente o bastante para incluir uma série de referências que certamente provocarão pequenos orgasmos de reconhecimento nos fãs.
...Elicits laughs, adventure, and refreshing, positive energy in a way series creator Gene Roddenberry intended.
The first Star Trek movie that feels fully realized. It's smart enough to be accessible to everyone, while retaining enough respect for the franchise's legacy to please diehard fans.
Faced with the task of acclimating new audiences to this venerably corny space opera, J.J. Abrams simultaneously executes a franchise reboot and nostalgia play.
