New Kirk and Scotty Chosen for Star Trek XI?
Oh, and by the way, Adrien Brody could have played Spock.

Discuss Article
It's been a while since we took a look at any of the casting rumors swirling around J.J. Abrams' Star Trek XI, but we're making up for lost time today -- here's a triple shot of Trek buzz from around the Web!

First up: Yesterday's IESB report that Mike Vogel has been tapped to play James Kirk. Though unable to obtain official confirmation from either the studio or Vogel's reps, the site did get the nod from the ever-popular unnamed "studio insiders," and it's worth noting that Vogel's handlers at the Gersh Agency "asked...nervously where we heard the news."

Film credits for the 28-year-old Vogel, a former model, include appearances in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, Poseidon, and -- perhaps most importantly -- a role in Abrams' forthcoming Cloverfield (or whatever it's called).

Meanwhile, IGN Movies reported yesterday that Paul McGillion -- best known for his role on Stargate: Atlantis -- has confirmed that he has auditioned for the role of chief engineer Montgomery "Scotty" Scott. McGillion issued the obligatory "great honor" statement, saying "Obviously it would be a great honour to follow in James Doohan['s] footsteps." The IGN report goes on to note that Doohan's son has tossed his hat in the ring for McGillion, calling him "a GREAT choice for the role of Scotty."

This last bit isn't really a casting rumor, but it's interesting nonetheless: In a report posted yesterday at MTV Movies, Adrien Brody confirms that he was at least briefly up for the role of Spock:

"I did talk to J.J. [Abrams] about that...that would have been cool. I told my parents. They got a kick out of it. 'I may be Spock!' Oh, well. Could have been cool."

There's no denying Brody's chops, but it's hard to argue with Abrams' ultimate choice of Zachary Quinto for young Spock. Aside from Quinto, the latest Trek's confirmed cast now includes Zoe Saldana as Uhura and Anton Yelchin as Pavel Chekov. With the film's release date still over a year away, we can expect to read plenty more of these reports.

Great. They're aiming for the teenage female demographic. What a waste. Trek is dead.

First reaction: "Mike Vogel, who the crap is he?" Um... BAD choice, IMO. Paul's seems cute enough.

Yeah... I don't really see any remsemblance between young Shatner and Vogel, and his filmography sucks to boot. Meh.

As for Paul McGillion, I love him in Atlantis, but isn't he a little too old for the part?

Settle down FANBOYS... Settle down...

Just wait til the movie comes out before gurgitating comments of the sort.

Have faith... I am not saying that this movie is not going to turn out to be a big pile of stinky turd, I am just saying that there is nothing so far that says that 'Trek is dead' or any other amazingly premonitious comments of the sort.

Jesus... ANOTHER Trek casting rumor... do you you guys (RT Staff) not understand that this had become a joke about a dozen or so (completely false) rumors ago? I didn't even read it. Who cares? Until it's official it might as well be Matt Damon again. Seriously... enough already. If you can't come up with any real movie news, go bag some groceries and give someone else a go!

all I can say is that they get some actually good actors and actresses for these roles, otherwise even though I'm a big fan of the star trek series, I might not see it.

As long as he can pull off a Shatner, I don't care who they hire for Kirk. I love McGillion, though. He may look older, but he cleans up real nice.

Zachary Quinto would be a way better Spock than Adrian Brody.

If you're not reffering to the movies, First Contact was fantastic. I also thought Enterprise was good, IMO.

Or, or....we can have big name actors ruin it with their ego and their latest love interests. Ocean's 15 - the Trek Years!

Honestly, I trust J.J. Abrams. I don't know what he'll do, but he won't ruin it.

I would love to see a good Star trek film (i.e The Wrath of Kahn, The Voyage Home , First Contact, but more wrath of kahn the space battle in that film was epic) but unless Coverfield show's us somthing differant from the soap opera slash MI3 Abrams put out i think it will suck he has no presence for cinema watch MI 1 or 2 then pop in 3 and you'll get what im talking about (if you can see it) it was like a long episode of Alias i felt like i was watching T.V.

I hope not, but I'm inclined to agree! Star Trek was dead after "First Contact." It just got weird: Picard and TNG crew battling facelift aliens and Picard's younger clone in Nemesis, while ST: DS9 went off on a dominion war rampage. I'm not even going to mention ST: Enterprise. At this point, I'd be more inclined to see Leonard Nimoy, Shatner and the surviving members of the original series give it one last shot than to hand the Final Frontier over to the O.C.

You're right.

First contact and then it ended. Let's have Shatner and Nimoy one more time, dammit!
