Star Trek XI Teaser Online!
Also: Abrams doesn't realize "no overacting" and "classic Trek" are mutually exclusive.

J.J. Abrams is no dummy. With the future of the Star Trek film franchise hinging on his fresh-faced reboot, the Cloverfield producer knew the best time to debut Star Trek XI's first teaser would be the date he'd been mercilessly drilling into moviegoers' brains for months: 1-18-08.

To that end, Cloverfield viewers were treated to the Trek teaser over the weekend -- but if you weren't one of the millions who flocked to theaters to see a headless Statue of Liberty, don't fret: Along with the official Trek XI site, the teaser has surfaced online for all to see.

It's a teaser, so the less you go in expecting, the more you'll probably enjoy it; that being said, these few seconds of footage definitely make the most of themselves. And while you're at the Trek site, you may wish to follow the instructions laid out by ComingSoon:

In addition to the new trailer coming online in High Definition quality, the official website has added a red blinking light to the right of the words "UNDER CONSTRUCTION," which, if clicked on, takes you to a new viral site with the URL NCC-1701.com. It features four cameras of the shipyard which you can bring into focus by changing the frequency.

UPDATE #2: If you let the page sit long enough, the "offline" camera on the page will show a corridor for just a second!

Meanwhile, over at Entertainment Weekly, Abrams shared a few Trek tidbits, promising there will be no Shatner-style ham from new Kirk Chris Pine, and saying the new film hearkens back to ''classic Trek -- as much social commentary as it is optimistic sci-fi...[it's] both dramatic and funny."

I can honestly say that this is the first time in many many years that I have looked forward to a Star Trek movie...I think JJ will do a good job of working with the legacy.....Can't wait to see it this Christmas...and looking forward to that paunchy Shatner cameo

I liked the teaser. It gave a sense of exploring the unknown, of awe and wonder, similar to that of the classic 2001: Space Odyseey or even the more recent Sunshine.
I hope the movie can keep up with it.

Nice. Here's hoping that, for once, an odd numbered Star Trek movie can deliver.

This movie is going to suck....JJ needs to stick to producing, I mean MI3 sucked and so did everything else he did. He's got a 5% tomatometer, I mean, what the hell are the Star Trek people thinking letting him direct....oh....wait...I am thinking of Uwe Boll. HAHAHAHHA Got you going there. I can't freakin wait until this comes out. And MI3 rocked! I hope they make the clingons more aggressive and evil. That would be cool.

One more thing, did anyone else see the cast on the IMDB website for Star Trek??? Yeah....Winnona Rider is part of the cast....and...you are going to love this one...Tyler Perry....TYLER PERRY???? What the hell! That's weird to me. I guess they cast Winnona to get all the 90's reject drugies to see the movie. And with Tyler Perry, maybe they are trying to get a black audience. Check out the cast here: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0796366/

Can anyone think of a funny *** title if Tyler Perry did a Star Trek movie. Lemme know...this will be histerical!

"MI3 sucked and so did everything else he did"

Really? While I wasn't wowed by MI3 (I don't think he had that much control over it, and he was stuck with Cruise), do you really think LOST sucked? And Alias?

I don't think this will be particularly loyal to the original canon, but I think it has the potential to be a damn good movie.

Looking forward to it. But guys, really, you lost me at "MI3 sucked." No offense of course, but had you of said "MI2 sucked" then, well, I'd be looking for a thumbs up icon rather than raising an eyebrows is wonder.

If you just refresh the page a different camera will be off line most of the time, so you don't have to keep waiting to see a flash of the off line camera

I just realized what a gigantic dork I am. I am geeking out over a teaser trailer!? Yes, yes I am. I am so hoping this does for the Star Trek world what Casino Royale did for Bond. Is it too much to ask? Damn, I'm excited.

How about, Tyler Perry Presents: "Star Trek Black-The Wrath of Perry Movies!".....no white people were harmed in the making of this movie.

Here's hoping here too, sunsaz, that this new one can erase all memory of "Star Trek: Nemesis." I was not too fond of "Insurrection", either.
