Box Office Guru Wrapup: Star Trek Soars To $76M Opening

Wolverine takes a 68% dive in its second week.

This weekend a classic franchise was reborn as North American moviegoers came out in strong numbers for the new Star Trek which grossed an estimated $76.5M over its extended three-and-a-half-day debut. The impressive figure consists of roughly $4M from early showtimes that began at 7pm on Thursday evening and $72.5M across the standard Friday-to-Sunday period.

The $125M Paramount production was a gamble that paid off as the franchise was left for dead after the last installment, 2002's Star Trek: Nemesis, grossed a dismal $43.1M striking out with fans worldwide. The new Trek averaged a solid $18,836 over the three-day period from 3,849 theaters including 138 Imax venues. The $72.5M figure represented the biggest opening ever in franchise history more than doubling the $30.7M of 1996's First Contact, the previous best in the eleven-pic series. But comparisons are not fair since previous films were made for the die-hard fans and enjoyed much lower ticket prices. The new Trek was a reboot with a new younger cast that played to fans and to general action audiences too.

Breaking down the 3.5-day opening weekend, Star Trek launched on Friday with $30.8M including about $4M from Thursday previews. Saturday fell 11% to $27.4M, and Sunday is estimated to slide by 33% to $18.3M. The three-day tally also ranked as the second biggest debut of 2009 trailing only last weekend's X-Men Origins: Wolverine which launched with $85.1M.

Reviews were fantastic for Star Trek which were key in allowing the J.J. Abrams-directed hit to reach a broader audience. If strong word-of-mouth kicks in, the U.S.S. Enterprise and its crew could go on to lofty heights.

Following its muscular top spot bow last weekend kicking off the summer movie season, X-Men Origins: Wolverine took a freefall in its second weekend plunging 68% to an estimated $27M for second place. The sharp drop was even bigger than the ones suffered by other effects-driven action films opening on the first weekend of May like 2007's Spider-Man 3 (62%), 2004's Van Helsing (60%), and 2003's X2: X-Men United (53%). Star Trek, and its appeal to much of the same audience, took its toll on the mutant prequel as did mixed reactions from fans. Wolverine played out more like March's super hero saga Watchmen which also tumbled 68% in its second weekend.

After ten days, the Hugh Jackman starrer has banked $129.6M. Spider-Man 3 and Watchmen collected 70-80% of their domestic totals in the first ten days and Wolverine shows no sign of being different. Budgeted at $130M, Origins should finish in the vicinity of $170M.

The romantic comedy Ghosts of Girlfriends Past held up well in its second weekend declining by 32% to an estimated $10.5M. After ten days, the Matthew McConaughey pic has taken in a respectable $30.2M and could be headed for a $50-60M finish. The Warner Bros. release will try to continue to counter May's testosterone action flicks and cater to underserved female audiences.

Beyonce Knowles fell to fourth place with her hit thriller Obsessed which grossed an estimated $6.6M, off 45%, for a solid cume of $56.2M for Sony. Teen king Zac Efron followed with his high school comedy 17 Again which dipped 31% to an estimated $4.4M giving Warner Bros. $54.2M to date. An amazing 22 new releases in 2009 have crossed the $50M mark compared to 14 from the same period last year.

Summit stumbled into sixth place with its new comedy Next Day Air which debuted with an estimated $4M. Starring Donald Faison, Mike Epps, and Mos Def, the R-rated pic averaged a mild $3,515 from 1,138 theaters.

Paramount's disappointing drama The Soloist followed with an estimated $3.6M, down 36%, for a $23.5M total. Holding up well in its seventh frame with an estimated $3.4M was the Paramount/DreamWorks toon Monsters vs. Aliens which eased by only 42% boosting the domestic total to a sturdy $186.9M.

Disney's nature doc Earth collected an estimated $2.5M, off 43%, for a $26.1M sum to date. The studio's Hannah Montana The Movie dropped 42% to an estimated $2.4M boosting the cume to a robust $74.1M.

The top ten films grossed an estimated $136.8M which was up 18% from last year when Iron Man remained in the top spot with $51.2M; and was up a healthy 47% from 2007 when Spider-Man 3 stayed at number one with $58.2M.

Congrats to Trek! Great way to kick off the summer, I hope they pull a Wrath of Khan for the sequel and improve on some stuff (the script) to be great.

I liked the script. And I'll be the first to say it...

"Star Trek is the best science fiction movie I've seen all decade, and will go down as one of my favorite movies." - Me - Stardate: Uhh, I don't know.

Yes. It was a religious expierence. just like I was a "TDK" fanboy last year (still am), I'll be with the Abrams "Star Trek" fanboys this year, attacking everyone who dosen't like it like some snoody prick...okay I won't, but I love it to death! I thought it was powerful, funny, greatly cast, greatly directed, excellent visuals, and in short, second best "Trek" film (after KHAAAAN!) and the best sci-fi I've seen all decade!!! It deserved more cash than the clawed man...

I've seen Star Trek three times (Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, opening weekend...) Everything about this movie is great, I've loved Trek ever since I can remember...def. my favorite movie in a long time, if ever...

glad to see star trek do good. there aren't any new releases next week that will be in direct competition when it comes to effects-driven films so i think trek will hold up well. i doubt that angels and demons will provide much competition seeing as it has a much different audience i think. it'll make money i'm sure seeing what the first movie did but it won't be from the same audience.

Chris B.

Chris B. on 05-10-2009 04:39 PM

well not any competition until TERMINATOR SALVATION COMES OUT OMGGGGGGGG I CAN'T WAIT ALS;DKJFA;LKJD

Playboy Slim

Playboy Slim on 05-10-2009 04:48 PM

What does ALS;DKJFA;LKJD mean? Well, you're right, "Angels and Demons" won't do so good. I heard it's much better than the first, but, so many people saw "The Da Vinici Code" that they have a idea of what they're getting into...crap....Then again, I said that about "Meet the Spartans", and was sadly wrong.

Wow, HSX predicted Star Trek's total.

I would think that it'll have more staying power than Wolverine.

Yay trek. By the way this is a must see in IMAX, it blows you away. And it beat the Dark Knight in IMAX ticket sales, so if u have not seen it in IMAX, see it lol. Great movie, like this is pure entertainment and much better than the mediocre wolverine. Summer just hit overdrive Yes J.J!!!!

I'm truly glad to see J.J. Abrams relaunch of "Star Trek" do so exceedingly well. This is a franchise that really needed a re-work per se and a fresh beginning start. This film delivered & is arguably one of the greatest reboots right next to Christopher Nolan's "Batman Begins". I must give true props to the cast who where all-round riveting but also give major props to J.J. Abrams & crew for really establishing a solidified & distinguishably first-rate beginning. Luckly the cast is all signed for a few sequels, the writers are already set to return & all they have to do is get back J.J. Abrams at the helm which talks have already begun. I see alot of potential for this franchise & bright future of a few exquisite sequels.

Also, I truly do feel Ron Howard's "Angels & Demons" will do admirabley well & bring in numbers at the B.O. especially with favoritable Tom Hanks as the lead. The Howard & Hanks collaboration usually if not always is a success.

i saw Wolverine last weekend and i think it was probably my favorite X-Men movie of the 4...really i think the only disappointing thing was Gambit...i like Taylor Kitsch as an actor (Friday Night Lights fan)...but he needed an accent, and that's really my only complaint....rambling, sorry. But yea i loved Star Trek. i have aaaaaaalways hated Star Trek in the past, but this movie is ****ing sweet. the time travel **** was a little hard to follow at some points...but overall...i loved it and i sorta' feel like i wanna' see it again...i think it would be a fantastic idea to reboot this whole franchise with this cast and J.J. Abrams directing. yea....

"You've...hated "Star Trek"? Don't say something like that unless you're going to back it up!!!!!"

Come on, for the Star Wars generation (the old ones), Star Trek was quite lame and cheesy. Too clean, too studio made and not enough kick *** accessory design. The Millenium Falcon, the storm troopers, Vador, the Imperial walker... so much good design in star wars.

And im not a star wars fan. I dont hate Star Trek personnaly and have recently watched most of the movies in HD but I understand why the Star Trek universe is repellent fopr some.

ST had an amazing opening, but what's going to be great about this movie are its legs. It's going to keep going and going and going, and put Wolverine out to pasture by a country mile. This movie deserved better, but we'll get a sequel and we'll get to see if Kurtzman and Orci can deliver the way that KHAN did.

"X-Men Origins: Wolverine took a freefall in its second weekend plunging 68% to an estimated $27M for second place. The sharp drop was even bigger than the ones suffered by other effects-driven action films ... mixed reactions from fans."

Said it weeks ago, big OW for Wolverine, but it'll plummet like a rock afterwards when negative word of mouth kills it.

I loved Star Trek, but I'm glad to see Wolverine is still doing strong. I really enjoyed that movie despite a lot of scoffers. But Trek was certainly much better on most accounts. I'm actually surprised it didn't get more.

Star Trek was great, and I'm sure that good word of mouth will allow it to holdover well next weekend. JJ Abrams is now 3/3 for awesome movies.

willywonkanobi

willywonkanobi on 05-10-2009 05:23 PM

Mission Impossible 3.

Star Trek absolutely exceeded my (very high) expectations. I have seen it twice. There are so many easter eggs for fans of the series.

Scotty killed the beagle from 'Enterprise' ... PRICELESS!

I hope it makes a boatload next week too so we can justify just as awesome of a sequel.

MI:III, My favorite of the series.

Can't wait to see Trek! Due to IMAX being sold out and the caps games being on, I didn't see it this weekend. I'm buying IMAX tickets for this weekend as we speak... CAN'T WAIT!!

Took my son to see Wolverine. It was decent, but the 2nd half blew awy the 1st. Deadpool was awesome, so was zero. ST is on another level tho. I cant see many movies being better this summer with the exception of Term Sal.

I, too, believe that the Star Trek gross will surpass Wolverine's. Right now I am watching the original series on Netflix instant view. The movie sparked my interest.
