But, within moments of take-off, the Enterprise receives a distress signal from two ships about to be obliterated, and Captain Kirk is asked to return to the helm. With his vast experience and expertise, he manages to save one of the ships. However, Kirk disappears in the process, and at least one of the passengers he saves is not all thankful. It seems that the rescue yanked him out of an idyllic world of perfect joy. Now he'll do anything, even kill, to return -- and it's up to Captain Jean-Luc Picard to prevent that from happening. Both a dismal farewell to the old crew and a dull introduction to the new.

So so attempt to combine two generations of Star Trek crews.

It would have, however, been nice if Generations would have gone beyond the scope of the television series to deliver something a bit more substantial.

Generations is predictably flabby and impenetrable in places, but it has enough pomp, spectacle and high-tech small talk to keep the franchise afloat.

A successful entry in the series, and a darn good film on its own.

...tries too self consciously to connect the old crew to the newer one and never quite makes a smooth transition.

The plot holes are obvious and disconcerting, the sub-plots feel tacked-on, and the characters are both thinly-drawn and badly-played.

Mostly, Generations spends its running length searching for, and never completely finding, its niche.

Even so-called trekkies had several bones to pick with the plot and characterisation of this movie.

The meeting of Patrick Stewart's Jean Luc Picard and William Shatner's James T. Kirk is worth the price of admission or video rental: it's the clash of the titans, Shakespeare meets the Sixties.

Everything this picture does differently is a piece of a potentially exciting story, but there just isn't any glue to hold this model Enterprise together.

Here is a movie so concerned with in-jokes and updates for Trekkers that it can barely tear itself away long enough to tell a story.
